About us
We work as one family of many experts: architects, designers, heritage leaders and specialist consultants. Ideally placed in regions covering the UK and in Asia Pacific, we undertake projects across eight core sectors. Clients come to us when they need to make sense of their project. We guide their transformation, and help clients to build new structures and create new spaces through bespoke design. For seven decades, we have been making sure that our clients’ buildings are designed for use today and for future generations.

‘It’s a quirk, Milton Gate, and it will be another quirk lost' Our C20 Heritage Expert, Jon Wright reflects on the significance of one of Denys Lasdun's final projects, Milton Gate, with Merlin Fulcher on this week's OpenCity podcast. Affectionately known as Lasdun's 'glass castle' by its fans - including Jon - the building is facing part-demolition despite opposition from Historic England. Colchester’s Grade II* listed Jumbo Water Tower was constructed in the 1880s using a whopping 1.2 million locally produced bricks 🤩 Standing proud over the city at 131 feet tall, Jumbo is the last intact listed water tower from a golden age of industrial water engineering. The colossal structure takes its affectionate nickname from another gentle giant; the famous and much loved elephant who lived at London Zoo between 1865 and 1882 🐘 Built to hold 1,000 tons of clean water, for over a century Jumbo supplied this to the city for drinking and firefighting 💧 But after falling into disuse in the 1980s, Jumbo’s future became uncertain and, following years of neglect, it eventually joined @HistoricEngland’s Heritage At Risk register. Thankfully, North Essex Heritage were on hand, campaigning to save Jumbo and secure a bright future for this iconic Victorian landmark – and that’s where we come in! 🎉 Last month we were thrilled to announce Jumbo as one of our #HeritageTreasures, awarding an £8m grant, made possible thanks to #NationalLottery players, to support its restoration. The project will make Jumbo accessible to the public for the first time, offering new job opportunities and an exciting new heritage and events space, with incredible views across the city and beyond ✨ 📸 by Chris Gorman Discover other #HeritageTreasures we’re investing in 👉 https://lnkd.in/eUMAb3ug #JumboColchester #LoveHeritage #HeritageFund

Last week saw the end of our public scaffolding tours of the North Wing at St Bartholomew's Hospital. It has been an amazing and uplifting 6 months, with over 2,500 people visiting our high level deck and Hogarth Staircase to enjoy a rare glimpse of conservation in action. A huge thank you to our wonderful team here and to all our supporters. Our £9.5m #SharingHistoricBarts project is due to complete later this summer with re-opening planned for 6 October. This remarkable project was only possible thanks to the generous support of the The National Lottery Heritage Fund via National Lottery players. Pictured here in all their hi-vis glory are some of our many recent visitors including The King's Foundation, Pilgrim Trust, Samira Ahmed, Marcus Herbert, David Hall and Historic England. A shout-out also to our architects Purcell, conservators Paine & Stewart and main contractor Coniston Limited. Thank you everyone!

I’m excited to share that we have now submitted the planning application for the transformation of the historic Assize Court in Devizes into the new home for Wiltshire Museum! As project architect, it’s been a privilege to work on reimagining this iconic building—preserving its rich heritage while designing a space that will serve as a world-class museum for generations to come. This planning submission marks a significant step forward, and I’m incredibly proud of the team’s dedication in bringing us to this point. A huge thank you to everyone involved. Looking forward to the next phase! #Architecture #HeritageConservation #HistoricBuildings #AssizeCourt #Devizes #WiltshireMuseum #PlanningApplication #MuseumDesign

It’s not often that I get to see fire tests in person, and even less so tests of historic doors, but today I witnessed just that. Two existing doors side by side, almost identical, with the exception that one has received joinery repairs, smoke seals, and fire rated glass set within a secondary frame. It was a hugely interesting and informative day to see these tests taking place.
