One of the proposed changes to the employment law under Labour is stricter guidelines surrounding probationary periods for new staff. These could include a maximum probation period length and a fairer dismissal process during a probationary period. Flexible Working on Day 1 The idea of flexible working from day one is a significant part of the UK Labour Party's proposed workplace reforms. Under current UK law, employees can request flexible working after they have been employed for 26 weeks (about six months). Labour, however, wants to make flexible working a right from the very first day of employment, making it much easier for workers to access flexible work arrangements without a waiting period. Labour’s proposal seeks to make flexible working the default option for all employees, starting from the first day of their employment and employees would not need to wait or prove their need for flexible working; instead, employers would be expected to accommodate such requests unless there is a clear business reason not to. This could include various forms of flexibility such as: 📌 Working from home (remote work) 📌 Job sharing 📌 Part-time working 📌 Compressed hours (working full-time hours in fewer days) 📌 Staggered start and finish times (flexitime) Labour argues that flexible working can lead to improved productivity, higher job satisfaction, and better retention of staff. Workers who have more control over their work arrangements are more likely to be engaged and motivated, which benefits both employees and employers.
