Stephen Fry has given our #CatchUpWithCancer campaign petition a huge boost as it nears half a million signatures. ➡️ Join us and sign the petition https://bit.ly/42Nc1Ow The actor, broadcaster and author was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2018, and talks about his own experience with cancer, the need for action, and the way King Charles III has approached his own health news. Our campaign’s petition urges government to take action as 4 in 10 cancer patients wait too long for vital treatment. Since 2020, 225,000 people have not had vital cancer treatment on time. If these people waited in a queue it would stretch 131 miles, the equivalent of a straight line between London and Cardiff. Stephen said: "Cancer is a verb – it moves and acts quickly – and so must we if we want to save our loved ones. Since 2020, 225,000 people have waited too long for cancer treatment, and these waits can be deadly. "If, like me, you want to help, here’s what you can do. Join me and sign up, to the #CatchUpWithCancer campaign petition. We need half a million signatures, and we’re almost there. Please share this message far and wide. With all our voices, speaking about the needs of cancer patients, we can push the government to act now." A huge thank you to Stephen and his team for their kindness and generosity. In a vital boost for UK cancer patients, the government will invest £70million in new radiotherapy treatment machines. This is the largest investment in modern radiotherapy for a decade and the first time in years that radiotherapy has been recognised by the government as an equally important player in curing cancer. Radiotherapy UK Chair, Professor Pat Price, welcomed the news, which broke just days after the launch of our new Modern Radiotherapy report in the House of Commons; and four years after we co-founded the #CatchUpWithCancer campaign. Our Trustee, Andy Tudor, had radiotherapy for a brain tumour recurrence in 2022. He said: “Many of us are only here because of timely and effective radiotherapy treatment." The £70million is a positive first step towards replacing older machines, which can mean faster treatments and less delays due to breakdowns. Since 2020 we have campaigned passionately on behalf of patients to have modern radiotherapy recognised as a solution in cutting waits and helping people live better and longer. More than half a million people have signed the #CatchUpWithCancer petition. With this momentum we'll continue to campaign for equality of access to modern radiotherapy across the UK to cure more patients with cancer, quicker. We call for sustainable, long-term investment in this life-saving cancer treatment and the workforce who deliver it. "Invest £1 billion in the radiotherapy sector, a relatively modest amount out of the overall budget, and lay the foundations for the world-beating cancer performance of which we are capable. And save tens of thousands of lives. C’mon, Wes, this is an easy win!" Daily Telegraph columnist Allison Pearson has made a bold appeal to Health Secretary Wes Streeting. Amongst other asks, the award-winning journalist has flagged the need to put modern radiotherapy front and centre in UK cancer services. If you caught the launch of our Productivity Report in Parliament yesterday, you'll know strategic investment in radiotherapy could create 87,500 EXTRA treatment appointments for cancer patients each year. For a price tag far, far lower than the cost of treating people too late. What are we waiting for? Let's #CatchUpWithCancer ➡️ https://bit.ly/40eWmbe

Lynsey, Andy and Sarah ready to win hearts and minds in the House of Commons this afternoon! Right now we are welcoming MPs from across the UK to ring the changes with our new productivity report. Interest has been huge, so a big Thank You to everyone that rallied and wrote to their representative. Curing more patients with cancer, quicker: Unlocking modern radiotherapy is endorsed by our wonderful patron, Bryan Robson OBE: and makes a no-nonsense, evidence-based case for investing in the radiotherapy workforce, technology and infrastructure. The bottom line? Let's get our cancer services back in the Premier League for the sake of every UK patient! The radiotherapy workforce deserves better 🧡 Our latest workforce survey shows that 80% of radiotherapy professionals have considered leaving due to burnout and poor working conditions, or know a colleague who feels this way. The dedication of these professionals keeps services running, but relying on goodwill alone isn't sustainable. It's time to prioritise investment and support to protect the future of cancer care and retain the skilled workforce patients rely on.
