The Museum occupies two public sites at Colindale in North London, and Cosford in Shropshire, West Midlands. Each site offers a unique experience to the visitor and the exhibits complement each other. Both Museums are free to enter and tell the story of the people who moulded the world of aviation from the daredevil early aviators to wartime heroes and the thousands of ordinary Service men and women who have served in the RAF and whose contribution has shaped the world that we live in today. With a world-class collection and display of aircraft, integrated with special exhibitions, films, interactives, artwork, engines, missiles, photographs, medals and uniforms and research and education facilities, the Museum takes an innovative approach to telling these stories whilst keeping with tradition.

  • 📣Norman Brice's final blog chapter on Operation Market Garden reflects on its legacy. Field Marshal Montgomery defended the operation, claiming it was 90% successful, but many historians disagree. Despite capturing several bridges, the failure to secure Arnhem Bridge meant the primary objective was missed. 😞 The RAF faced challenges due to bad weather and limited resources 🌧️, but their sacrifice was immense. With nearly 11,000 British and Polish soldiers involved, only 2,398 returned. The Dutch endured devastation and the harsh "Hunger Winter" ❄️. The tragedy of Arnhem is remembered today through annual commemorations and tributes at Oosterbeek War Cemetery 🌺. 👉Read more at: https://lnkd.in/eqfFSyEf

  • 🇬🇧 Operation Market Garden Update 🇬🇧 The final resupply to Arnhem was attempted by seven Dakotas from 575 Squadron. Flak hit all aircraft, and no signals were seen from the ground.🛩️ The 1st Airborne Division was forced into a shrinking area near the Hartenstein Hotel and the north bank of the Rhine. Outgunned by German armour, with supplies running out, the situation grew desperate. XXX Corps made little progress from Nijmegen. An attempt to cross into Oosterbeek was met with fierce resistance, with only 300 men making it through at heavy cost. Poor visibility hampered 2TAF, limiting them to just 156 sorties. ✈️ Read it now at: 👉 https://lnkd.in/enRDTZkT #WW2History #Arnhem #AirborneForces #BattleOfArnhem #OperationMarketGarden
