  • As we continue to celebrate Black History Month, we spoke to Dr Toyosi Adeniji, National First5 Chair, about her thoughts on this year’s theme 'Reclaiming Narratives' and what it means to her. Reclaiming our narratives is essential to building a future that honours the past while driving progress. For Black History Month, we celebrate the power of our voices, our stories, and our resilience. In healthcare, we have the opportunity to reshape systems of care that have historically marginalized Black communities. As unconventional as this might sound, I would love to push things a bit further and change the focus from reclaiming our narratives to actually changing, redefining and embodying what the narrative should be. Through advocacy, and cultural understanding, we can create spaces where people are heard. Together, we can build a legacy of health and empowerment for future generations. Let’s continue rewriting the story, one where every voice matters. Thanks for sharing your story Toyosi. #ChangingTheNarrative #BlackHistoryMonth #HealthcareLeadership #BHM24

  • We’re pleased to see the unsustainable pressures general practice is facing being recognised by Care Quality Commission in their new report. It’s long overdue as many of our members tell us about the additional pressures and stress that CQC inspections have placed on them and their teams. Some of our members have reported awful experiences with their practice inspections and we have been raising significant concerns with the CQC. We have welcomed the recent Dash review and Professor Sir Mike Richards’ report on how and where the CQC needs to improve. We hope that this will be the first step towards creating a more proportionate system of inspection that is fair and fit for purpose - and that practices and patients can trust and have confidence in. • Today we launched our new retention report - Looking After the GPs of Today, to Safeguard the Workforce of Tomorrow.   Our GPs are stretched to their limits, and since 2015, NHSE has 1,557 fewer full-time fully qualified GPs. Yet the demand for GP services continues to rise.    It’s a vicious cycle: unsustainable workloads are forcing GPs to leave, leaving the remaining staff under even greater pressure. This strain accelerates burnout, driving the workforce deeper into crisis. And the warning signs from our survey are clear:    📉 42% of GPs are considering leaving the profession within the next five years  ❗ 76% believe excessive workloads are compromising patient safety    This exodus can’t continue. That’s why our report sets our clear recommendations for the government and NHS England to reverse this trend and support our GPs before it’s too late:    1. 𝙍𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙚𝙬 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙉𝙃𝙎 𝙇𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙏𝙚𝙧𝙢 𝙒𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙘𝙚 𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙣 NHS England should undertake a comprehensive review of the Long Term Workforce Plan with a focus on GP retention, and for the Government to establish an independent workforce projection statutory body.    2. 𝘿𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙡𝙤𝙥 𝙖 𝙉𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙂𝙋 𝙍𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙎𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙜𝙮 NHS England should develop a National Retention Strategy for general practice that ensures national consistency via ring-fenced national funding, oversight, and guidance.    3. 𝙋𝙧𝙞𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙨𝙚 𝙎𝙪𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩 & 𝙒𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙗𝙚𝙞𝙣𝙜 Protected Learning Time should be written into a future GP Contract, and NHS England should guarantee ongoing funding for Practitioner Health services for all health and care professionals employed in the NHS.    4. 𝙏𝙖𝙘𝙠𝙡𝙚 𝙑𝙞𝙨𝙖 𝙈𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨 The Home Office should grant IMGs across the UK the right to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain upon Completion of Training in General Practice (CCT), and NHS England should reinstate the IMG practice matching service.    By implementing the RCGP’s recommendations, we can secure the future of patient care in England, ensuring that GPs are valued, supported, and retained within the NHS.

  • "We need to hear from members about what they want their College to provide them with in the form of value – in terms of emotional value, brand value, professional development value as well as financial. This shouldn’t be a top-down decision.” In our latest GP Frontline article, we spoke to Dr Thomas Patel-Campbell, the soon-to-be new RCGP Vice Chair Finance and Member Value. He discusses his journey as a GP partner and how we can deliver value, in its broader sense to our members over the next five and 10 years.
