Socially-responsive design

About us

RCKa provides an innovative model for architectural practices operating in a challenging and changing civic and economic landscape. Our active and enterprising approach to enabling and securing projects of relevance to the local community is based upon critical dialogue, and was developed to satisfy the central ambition of the practice, to produce consistently high-quality pioneering and socially responsive architecture. We’re passionate about producing socially responsive architecture - beautiful buildings that respond and resonate with people and place. This approach integrates stakeholders and users in the design process to ensure proposals support use. We believe that only by developing a deeper knowledge of those who will use our buildings, and testing proposals with them, are we truly able to innovate.

In our ongoing series from the Get SMEs Building Again report, we explore the 4th policy recommendation: Suburban Intensification – A Quick Fix to Meet Labour’s Housing Targets by Russell Curtis at RCKa 🏘️ Labour has set an ambitious goal to build 1.5 million homes in its first term, but how can this be achieved quickly and effectively? 🏗️ A long-term solution like the new towns programme may look appealing, but it requires years of planning and significant infrastructure investment. However, suburban intensification, like Croydon’s innovative policy, offers a practical short-term solution. Croydon successfully delivered nearly 2,000 homes on small sites in just four years by intensifying its suburban areas. If expanded across London’s low-density suburbs, this approach could add up to 900,000 homes, simply by modestly increasing housing density around suburban stations. 🔑 What makes suburban intensification work? · Clear development guidelines that encourage small developers to invest with confidence. · Targeting low density areas near transit—places with existing infrastructure that can support more housing. · Mitigating planning risks, making speculative land flipping less attractive. · Suburban intensification doesn’t require major legislative changes—it just needs the political will and policy focus to support small developers and intensify development around key areas. By leveraging existing land and infrastructure, this approach could meet Labour’s housing goals while stimulating regional economies. Read the full report here: https://shorturl.at/0LqkX 🔗

🏆 We won a Housing Design Award! 🏆 At a ceremony last night in Witherford Watson Mann's wonderful Appleby Blue almshouse in Bermondsey we were delighted to join our clients Retirement Villages Group Ltd in receiving a Design For Homes #HousingDesignAward Project Award for our West Malling later living development in Kent. We'll soon be starting on site, and when complete the scheme will provide 140 new homes on this peri-urban, ecologically rich site. A previous consent by a different architect had secured just half this number through planning appeal, but our design-led approach - which carefully responded to local context and character - was approved under delegated powers. This is our sixth housing design award, and we're delighted that every scheme we've designed in the later living sector has either been shortlisted, or won, a Housing Design Award, including our Hortsley development which secured the HAPPI award in 2019, and The Wyldewoods in Chester for Retirement Villages Group which was crowned winner of the Towards Carbon Net Zero prize in 2021.

I was delighted to contribute an article to a new Pocket Living publication on the need for a new Labour government to support SME developers, as reported in Building Magazine today. For too long we've relied on a handful of volume housebuilders to meet our housing needs, and while they have an important part to play, our SME development sector has been hollowed out by rising costs coupled with an unpredictable planning environment. If we are to have any hope of getting near Labour's ambitious target of 380,000 homes per year, we cannot rely on new towns, grey belt and large corporate developers alone. My article suggests several ways in which we can unleash a wave of new homes in sustainable urban and suburban locations, without ripping up the existing planning system and starting again. https://lnkd.in/eYdXGjFg

RCKa's mission is to enhance people's lives. This is easy to say, but hard to do—and even more difficult to measure. That's why we have set ourselves a bold target: to positively impact 250,000 lives by the end of this decade. Whether it's a moment of calm in the morning sun, providing a safe home, or helping set a young person off on a new life direction, our aim is to make a meaningful difference. To celebrate this mission, we are delighted to unveil our new website, designed and built by Studio Thomas and Eight Arms. Our new site focuses on the tangible and positive impacts of our work on the people and communities we serve. We would love to hear what you think!
