Today is World Menopause Day, a moment to raise awareness, reduce stigma and make sure there is support for people who are affected. Here at Reach we have a dedicated Employee Network, Meno-Chat, that helps women within our organisation feel empowered throughout their menopause journey, both through education and creating a support network. Over the last month, 12 young people have been getting a taste of journalism in our newsrooms as part of a training programme with The King's Trust (formerly the Prince’s Trust). At a celebration event on Friday, the participants shared some of their highlights and achievements, from attending masterclasses with industry experts to shadowing journalists, and working on their own stories that have been published in print and online at the Mirror, Star, BusinessLive and others. They also received a certificate and some inspirational words from our Chief Executive, Jim Mullen. One of the young people said: “I’ll be forever grateful for this course, for the experience from both Reach and The Prince’s Trust. The skills I will be able to use for the next step of my career and, regardless of what happens, this course has opened doors for me.” Another said: “This has been truly life-changing. Thank you.” Congratulations to all 12 participants and good luck for the next stage. Here’s a few pictures from Friday’s celebration event. #getintojournalism #journalismcareers #journalismtraining #inclusion

As part of our Enrichment programme, it was our pleasure to welcome Helen Dalby, Audience and Content Director and Editor-in-Chief of Reach plc, to NSFC yesterday. Helen leads newsrooms in Newcastle and Teesside, overseeing a diverse portfolio of news brands across the North East, including Chronicle Live and Teesside Live online, as well as the Chronicle, Journal, Gazette, and Sunday Sun in print. Leading a session with our Journalism Enrichment class, she shared exclusive insights into a variety of aspects of the journalism industry. Helen discussed what it’s like to work at Reach, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the fast-paced environment of a digital newsroom. She also explored how the nature of news and media has evolved dramatically over the last 20 years, particularly with the rise of digital platforms and social media. Lastly, Helen provided practical advice on how to kickstart a career in journalism, including tips on building a portfolio, the importance of networking, and navigating the ever-changing media landscape. Expert-led sessions like this are a great way to prepare students for their future and are just one of the many exciting aspects of our Enrichment Programme here at NSFC. Thank you, Helen! #GoFurther

Social Video Journalist Thomas Munns recently produced a series of nostalgic archive videos for 17 of our regional news sites, offering a fascinating insight into how we used to live. So far, the videos have been viewed almost 1 million times on Facebook. Tom sourced old footage of the early 1900s onwards from Getty Images to build 34 videos for Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. The collection covers cities in the North and Midlands such as Manchester, Liverpool, Nottingham and Birmingham and more rural areas in the South such as Devon, Cornwall, Plymouth and Kent. Check out this video of Greater Manchester in the early 1900s for the Manchester Evening News, which has been one of the most popular videos. #journalism #socialmedia #nostalgia #localjournalism #localhistory
