The Bulls*** of the Week: “Only children are worse-off” 👪 This time the bulls*** of the week does not come from social media but from a conversation I had this week during a lecture with my undergrad students. 👪 We were discussing how parents influence children and we ended up talking about only children. When I asked them if they though that only children were at a disadvantage compared with children with siblings. They all said ‘yes’. The reasons they gave were: ‘only children are spoiled’, ‘only children are more selfish because they don’t have to share with anyone’, ‘only children have less emotional intelligence’, or ‘only children often feel lonely’. 👪 What does the research say? Are only children worse-off? The answer is no. When we look at the research as a whole, we see that there are no differences between children with and without siblings. There are some studies that have found some differences and when these differences are found, you know what? They tend to favour only children. Some studies have found that only children are more emotionally competent, more intelligent, and higher achievers than children with siblings (except if we compare them with first borns). 👪 So, if you have an only child by choice or because you could not have more, do not worry about it. You are not selfish, you are not hurting your child. Growing up with no siblings will not make your child spoiled, weird, or less able. 👪 This is yet another example of how misinformation can hurt people. There is no ‘right’ number of children you should have. There is only the ‘right’ number for you. 👉 If you have heard, read or seen any claims about parenting or child development and you are not sure whether to trust them or not, send it to me and I will discuss them next week! 👨👩👧👦 I’m a developmental psychologist and founder and CEO of REC Parenting 👨👧👧 At REC Parenting we partner with employers to provide 1-2-1 mental health support, coaching for new parents, and parenting resources to their working parents and carers 🗣 I also provide corporate talks on a vast range of parenting topics 💪 Get in touch today to discuss how we can support your organization! 🔔 Follow me here and in IG (@recparenting) for more parenting tips #parenting #employeebenefits #onlychildren #mythbusting

Our founder, Dr Ana Aznar, explains in Newsweek why she believes it is vital for mothers to open up. Do you agree with her? We leave you the link to the full story 👇 "For decades, society has expected mothers to put everyone's needs above theirs, to never complain, to never be angry, to never need a break, and to love every single moment of motherhood. This is why, until recently, sharing an opinion like this woman's was unthinkable," she said. "But it is crucial that mothers open up about their motherhood experiences; it is only this way that women can stop feeling guilty or ashamed when their thoughts or feelings about motherhood are not what society expects." At REC Parenting we partner with employers to support their working parents' mental health.
