  • 📈#JobsOutlook: Recovering employer confidence delivered good news before Spring Statement, but much still to do to get businesses hiring. Perceptions of how the UK economy was performing were two points higher, at net: -23, compared to the three months to December. And their confidence in making investment and hiring decisions improved by one point, to net: -4, in that most recent quarter compared to the three months to December. Key findings include: 💠Short-term permanent hiring sentiment saw an improvement in February (net: +10), lifting overall sentiment by two percentage points to net: +6, for the quarter after a more subdued January (net: +3). 💠Medium-term permanent hiring intentions also improved to net: +5, with a particularly strong February uplift (net: +9). The North led regional sentiment with a robust net: +17. 💠Mid-sized businesses (50–249 employees) remained the most confident in medium-term permanent hiring, reaching net: +19, outpacing both large firms (net: +12) and small businesses (net: +1). 💠Sentiment around short-term use of temporary and contract workers stabilised over the quarter, returning to positive territory in February (net: +3) after dips in December and January. The Midlands stood out as the most optimistic region for short-term temp hiring (net: +13). 💠Medium-term hiring sentiments for temporary workers also improved by 1 percentage point to net: +2, primarily fuelled by a strong rebound in February (net: +6). Regional sentiment across the quarter was mixed. Optimism in the Midlands (net: +15) and the North (net: +9) was counterbalanced by net negative sentiment in London (net: -5) and outside England (net: -15). Read more: https://bit.ly/43uBLBE

  • In a fierce commentary in today's Daily Telegraph, Neil Carberry, Chief Executive of REC, takes aim at the government’s recent unwarranted jibes about healthcare staffing companies.   In his article, Neil writes: 🗣️ Health Secretary Wes Streeting is wrong to criticise firms that provided the essential workers who supported the country through the Covid-19 pandemic. 💰 There is a cap on costs for affordable, on-framework agency supply of temporary staff – yet most of these rates haven’t increased since 2016. Imagine not receiving a pay rise in almost a decade... 🔄 Flexible work is a reality in the NHS. It’s a misconception to think an internal recruitment agency could solve the ongoing challenges. 🤝 If labour truly believes in partnership between the private sector and workers, it’s time to redesign a system that’s currently failing everyone involved.   What are your thoughts on this? Should the government take a more balanced approach to working with healthcare staffing firms?   #Healthcare #Staffing #NHS #Recruitment #Leadership #Policy

  • Commenting on today’s Spring Statement, the REC Chief Executive, Neil Carberry said: Success for the Chancellor and the government comes from economic growth – but growth comes from private sector success. The rise in Employer’s National Insurance, anti-business rhetoric, and impractical employment regulations are holding businesses back. We need real action on apprenticeship reform, bureaucracy reduction, and industrial strategy to unlock the full potential of the labour market." On the NHS workforce crisis, REC Chief Executive Neil Carberry sets the record straight: ⚠️ Blaming agencies for high staffing costs misses the point. A nine-year freeze in agency pay rates has pushed NHS Trusts towards costly off-framework solutions. Agencies are ready to be partners in solving the crisis – but they must be treated as part of the solution, not the problem. 🔗 Read the full response here: https://bit.ly/4l87rDe
