Creating a circular economy for battery metals as the UK's first industrial-scale Li-ion battery recyclers

About us

Recyclus Group is providing a national battery recycling initiative to support the global energy transition, the mass adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), and the movement towards carbon neutrality. As we establish the UK’s first industrial-scale lithium-ion battery recycling operation, our battery recycling capabilities will prove essential in the shift from fossil fuels to electric transportation. With more and more automotive manufacturers now switching production from internal combustion engines (ICE) to EV transport, the recycling of lithium-ion batteries has become critical if we are to meet demand and address the impending bottleneck, to allow for the mass rollout of EVs. This initiative couldn’t have come at a better time, as we move ever closer to the 2030 deadline—at which point the sales of all new ICE vehicles in the UK will be banned and replaced with EVs and Hybrids. Recyclus Group is well placed to provide the required strategic support in the UK battery recycling sector, in order to contribute to the stable supply of battery metals that is fundamental to the widespread adoption of EVs.

We are pleased to announce that Recyclus Group has received certification for our Competence Management System (CMS V5). The CMS is a management system-based standard that is approved by Defra, SEPA, and the EA, as a method of demonstrating the technical competence of permitted waste sites. As a responsible recycling business, this certification reflects our commitment to maintaining and demonstrating competency at every level, from leadership through to our operational teams. Rather than relying solely on one individual in a Technically Competent Manager (TCM) role, our CMS empowers all our staff with the skills and knowledge needed to uphold our safety, environmental, and operational standards. This accomplishment underscores our dedication to best practices and continuous improvement across our entire business. #CMS #CompetenceManagementSystem #BatteryRecycling #Lithiumion #CircularEconomy #Sustainability

Robin Brundle, Co-Founder and Director of Recyclus Group, recently discussed the vital role of cradle-to-cradle principles in our approach to lithium-ion battery recycling: “Our industrial-scale recycling technology, paired with UN-certified battery boxes, emphasises both safety and sustainability in battery recycling, supporting a responsible energy transition. With the projected scarcity of critical battery metals, it’s essential to secure a stable, ongoing supply. By breaking down batteries into reusable components, we can help ease supply chain pressures and offer a sustainable solution, supporting our vision for a circular economy in the battery metals sector.” A circular economy goes beyond traditional recycling by creating a closed-loop system. Materials are continually reused and repurposed, reducing waste and minimising the need for new mining and production. Instead of a linear approach—where products are made, used and then discarded—circular economy practices focus on keeping materials in circulation, recovering resources like lithium and cobalt from end-of-life batteries to meet growing demand and reduce environmental impact. At Recyclus Group, we are committed to building a resilient, environmentally responsible future. Our cradle-to-cradle recycling system, designed to serve the needs of an electrified economy, advances sustainable resource management by providing a continuous cycle of reuse and renewal in battery metals. #batteryrecycling #lithiumion #circulareconomy #sustainability

The European Union is reinforcing its commitment to sustainability through the new Draft EU 2030 Battery Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2023/1542). This regulation is a cornerstone of the European Green Deal, designed to establish a circular economy for batteries. Recycled Content Requirements and Recycling Mandates: • By 2030, batteries must contain a minimum of 12% cobalt, 4% lithium and 4% nickel from recycled sources, increasing to 26% cobalt, 12% lithium and 15% nickel by 2036. • Additionally, 50% of a battery’s weight must be recycled by 2026, rising to 65% by 2031. • Lithium Recovery targets are set at 50% by 2027, increasing to 70% by 2030, while collection rates for portable batteries are established at 70% by 2030. The regulation outlines a clear pathway for batteries to support the EU’s green energy transition. As we navigate this transformative regulatory landscape, Recyclus Group is dedicated to advancing these sustainability goals. Together, we can drive a greener future for energy storage in Europe. The UK government has introduced legislation to ban the sale of single-use vapes starting 1 June 2025, confirmed by Circular Economy Minister Mary Creagh. 5 million disposable vapes were discarded every week in the UK last year, with many ending up in landfills, waterways, and oceans. These devices contain harmful substances like nicotine and lithium, with the lithium waste alone equivalent to that in 5,000 electric vehicles annually. At Recyclus Group, we see this as an opportunity to provide sustainable recycling solutions, recover valuable resources, and protect our environment. We are proud to announce that our LiBox has been successfully deployed in collaboration with SEED ENVIRONMENTAL LIMITED - Fire and Flood, for a recent fire incident. After three residential storage batteries went into thermal runaway during a property fire and had to be placed into a swimming pool by emergency services, Seed Environmental-Fire and Flood were called in for their expertise to manage the incident and restore the property. Having made the site safe and stabilised the batteries, Seed Environmental-Fire and Flood safely recovered and loaded the batteries into LiBox units for secure transport to our recycling facility, for immediate processing.   Seed Environmental is a leading environmental consultancy and contractor, tackling complex challenges such as spillage incident response; contaminated land, water, and structure remediation; fire and flood restoration; and complex major loss management, for domestic, commercial, agricultural, and industrial sectors across the UK and Republic of Ireland. The LiBox, designed by Recyclus Group, is a modular steel container engineered for the safe transport of lithium-ion batteries. It features non-combustible battery pillows that contain flames and projectiles while maintaining safe external temperatures. Certified for UN Packing Group I and ADR P911 compliant, the LiBox fits the standard UK pallet size, ensuring safe, regulated transport across Europe. This project underscores our commitment to delivering innovative and safe solutions for the growing challenges of battery recycling. #batteryrecycling #safety #innovation #lithiumion #energystorage #fireprevention
