CEO RedSTART Educate | Financial Education for primary schools in under resourced communities | Social Mobility | Impact | Innovation

We have over 30 new member schools across the country joining the RedSTART Educate programme this year, with new applications arriving every day. They will become part of our community, alongside the 57 schools who already know the value of teaching primary school children about how money works. Some of our Year 6 children will start to make significant money based decisions in as little as 4 or 5 years time. From that point, their attitude to money will result in consequences that can be life changing. Tracey, the Head at St John’s school in Newcastle, has run the programme there for the last two years. She told our Regional Manager for the North East, Cherakee Bradley, today, “I love this programme. I have seen a noticeable difference in the students in the way they talk about money and their attitude to money. They are now talking about money at a higher level than you would expect for their age group”.

We have had to say “goodbye and good luck!” to all of our Year 6 children in the last few weeks, as they graduate from primary school and move up into secondary school in the Autumn. The children have been earning RedSTART£ by taking part in quizzes about applied maths and money in the RedSTART Educate Money Management App. They had the option to save their money in an interest bearing savings account and were able to spend their money in the RedSTART shop. There were 6,079 children from Year 2 to Year 6 in 24 schools using the App this academic year and the Year 6 children bought 1,166 items at varying price points. As you can see the LEGO Group is a firm favourite! Below are the children from St Michael’s primary school in Bath and Compass Point primary school in Bristol with their chosen items, and with the First Steps in Finance book which they are all given when they graduate from the programme at the end of Year 6. It’s been so exciting to see the positive connection the children are making between earning, saving and spending. These pictures arrived in the last week and brought a huge smile to our faces. We hope they have that effect on you, too. Farewell, Year 6!

All of a sudden, it’s over! The end of another academic year, and it was a corker! Here are a few of our highlights: *Our first report was published by The Policy Institute, King's College London, showing a statistically significant positive impact in our treatment schools. *24 schools were using the Money Management App for children from Year 2 to Year 6, and we ran over 250 workshops across the country, with the help of over 600 volunteers. *One of our primary schools had an Ofsted inspection and received an “Outstanding” rating for personal development. This is what the report said: “Pupils personal development is exceptional. The curriculum has been carefully designed to help pupils learn about important issues. For example, across the school, all pupils learn about financial literacy. This includes visits and workshops to understand how to manage money and the importance of savings.“ *We opened a new hub in Cardiff! We went there on Monday to meet some of our funders and volunteers, to see what’s going on in Cardiff Bay (it’s very lively and the water was so twinkly in the early evening sunshine!) and to reset, and share and agree our regional plans for the 24/25 academic year. Thank you to everyone who has supported us this academic year. To all our friends here on LinkedIn, all our wonderful teachers, amazing volunteers and freelancers, and our super supportive funders. We are so happy to be working with you! We hope you all have a fabulous summer and we look forward to seeing you again in the Autumn. Here are a couple of photos of our team on tour!

RedSTART Educate were thrilled to run a taster session of our #ChangeTheGame programme with Gladstone Primary School in Barry this week. Thank you for such a warm welcome! ⁩The Year 5 teacher said "the children were so engaged finding out about budgets, becoming critical consumers and income tax." Ronni Allsopp & Nia Morgan (she/her) are visiting a number of schools in Barry to run sessions over the next few weeks 😃 #FinancialLiteracy #NextGeneration

Such an amazing resource to share with the children we work with.

We’ve recently received two fantastic resources from RedSTART Educate. ‘Save Your Acorns’ for our Reception children as they start out on their financial education journey and ‘First Steps in Finance’ for Year 6 as they end their time with us. It's vitally important to equip all of our children with the knowledge and understanding needed to make informed financial decisions later in life. #financialeducation #financialliteracy

Thank you to the wonderful team J O Hambro Capital Management on Tuesday for their support in delivering our Year 6 Money Matters workshop.

This week we welcomed twenty two Year 6 pupils from Thomas Fairchild Community School to J O Hambro Capital Management to join a RedSTART Educate Money Counts workshop. Along with colleagues Clare Forster, Carolena Ludwig, Stephanie Slade, Robert Lancastle, Nicky Francis-Bailey, Bryonny Pearce, Caitlin Emery and RedSTART’s David Abrahams we ran a series of games to teach the principles of saving, compound interest, risk-reward, as well as giving the children a tour around our offices. The high levels of enthusiasm and commitment on display from everyone involved was hugely inspiring, with the winner managing to turn a virtual £500 into a very impressive £2,000! We would highly recommend other firms to get involved with amazing work RedSTART Educate are doing! #volunteering #moneycounts #redstart #financialeducation #compounding #riskreward #savings
