Today's takeover is from me, Emily Dewar, I'm the Head of Risk and Data Governance here at Reed Screening.
Learning to drive at 30 has been both humbling and empowering. For years, I kept putting it off — ready to embrace the life of a full-time passenger. But when life started demanding more flexibility (and one particularly smelly experience on the bus), I decided to take the plunge and finally start to learn.
Within 5 minutes of my first lesson, my driving instructor: 1. Asked if I wanted to buy one of her cats and 2. What I was currently studying at university. Obviously, a yes to the first one and a ‘why thank you’ to the second, but it was a strange reminder of how we all make assumptions about where we should be in life at a certain age. Learning to drive is something many people assume you’ve done by the time you’re in your early 20s but clearly, it doesn’t have to be that way.
At this point, I should mention, that whilst I hadn’t even sat behind the wheel of a car until a month ago, I had passed my theory test *twice*. The first time, life got in the way (and by life I really mean a steadfast rejection of the idea of driving), and my certificate expired before I could take a single driving lesson - whoops. So, back to the books I went, re-studying everything and passing again! That experience taught me patience and persistence. Sometimes we have to revisit things we think we’ve already nailed, and that’s okay. Learning is never a one-and-done process.
This whole experience has shown me that growth and learning don’t have a timeline. We often think certain milestones—like learning to drive—need to happen at a specific stage in life, but the truth is, it’s never too late to start something new. Whether you’re 16, 30, or 60, the road is always open for new opportunities and challenges.
It’s not just about driving; it’s about proving to myself that no matter your age, you can tackle new skills, face your fears, and come out stronger on the other side.
Here’s to embracing every curve in the road—both literally and figuratively. Keep learning, keep growing, and don’t let anyone (including yourself!) tell you it’s too late to start something new.
