✅ ❌ Let’s dive into the dos and don’ts of book trailers—an underrated book marketing tool! 👇 This brilliant example from Penguin Random House UK proves just how powerful a well-made trailer can be in today’s short-form content world. If you’re looking to create your own, here are some key tips to keep in mind! (WARNING: Don’t attempt a trailer without editing skills or professional help—bad trailers can do more harm than good.) ✅ DO identify your book’s hook before scripting. Your hook should make readers want to learn more about your book in less than 30 words. ❌ DON’T jump into selecting footage without a tight, catchy script that captures the tone and hook of your book. ✅ DO assemble all your quality media before editing. Whether it’s stock footage, music, or a voiceover, make sure every element is top-notch and properly organized in your files before you start. ❌ DON’T skimp on licensing. As fun as it might be to score your trailer with Taylor Swift's Cruel Summer, stick to royalty-free or licensed tracks to avoid copyright issues and having your video taken down. Check out some recommended free and paid services here-https://lnkd.in/gtUV9kCk ✅ DO use music and voiceover to set the tone. These elements frame how viewers feel, so make sure they capture the tone of your book. ❌ DON’T overwhelm the narrator's voice with the music, and vice versa. Check the audio balance with and without headphones to get it just right. ✅ DO pay close attention to the tone your transitions evoke during editing. Your editing style should reflect the story your book tells. ❌ DON’T neglect sound effects. They add an extra layer of detail, punctuate key moments, and foreshadow plot points without relying solely on visuals. ❌ DON’T forget a call to action (CTA)! There should be a clear prompt to remind readers to buy your book. Your ideal CTA might vary based on your story, but it should always be front and center in the final image next to your cover art. ✅ DO add a glowing review or two for extra impact. It’s a great way to wrap up the entire trailer on a positive note! 📍Where should you use your book trailer? Amazon Book Page: Give readers a cinematic sneak peek. Crowdfunding Campaigns: Visualize your story and attract more backers. Video Ads: Turn it into a high-converting ad on Meta or Amazon. Social Media: Perfect for Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube—short, snappy, and shareable. 👉 Want a step-by-step guide on making a book trailer with relevant examples and resources?—https://lnkd.in/gHihJNRW 👉 Are you an experienced book marketer? Something very fun! Another medium that brings me immense joy is the animated book trailer. It’s a slim window to a) turn heads and b) draw the reader in by neatly setting expectations. With that in mind, I always want my trailers to stand out within the endless, bland doomscrolling, and make efficient use of the format and duration. A special area of interest of mine is the movie title sequence. As well as being stylish, self-contained pieces of entertainment, they’re also meticulously and cleverly crafted to give the audience a flavour of what’s to come. And again, isn’t that marketing in its purest form - ‘Like this? Then sit tight, there’s more to come’. I took all of that and obsessed over this trailer for a book I am having a ball working on, one of the very best novels coming in 2025 - the superbly entertaining murder mystery THIS IS NOT A GAME from brilliant Kelly Mullen. Again working with Greg Burney, we pored over vintage move trailers and credit sequences to create this stylishly retro feel. We locked in that memorable colour palette and emphasised the striking typography, designing to and synching every movement around a specifically-chosen piece of music that sets a tone of classy fun. For me, it’s an impactful and memorable sequence that tries to emulate the joyful feeling of reading Kelly’s wonderful characters. Punctuated by transitions as sharp as the novel’s signature Gibson cocktail, and full of neat details like the wipe right text animation so prevalent in 60s Hollywood marketing, plus a little Pink Panther-esque Dachshund, I had a blast making it and even more fun watching it. Oh and do check out the book, you will not be disappointed. Martinis at the ready … 🍸 https://lnkd.in/eg2hi9Q7

Alright proofreaders, let's talk money 💸 For proofreading, rates can vary greatly based on genre and experience. Here’s our advice on setting your proofreading rates: 🆎 Set your per-word base rate: We recommend setting your rates per word, but quoting per 1,000 words can often be clearer for clients. Hourly rates might be better for complex or poorly formatted manuscripts, but most clients prefer per-word quotes to avoid inefficiency. 🔖 Offer a sample proofread: Even if you charge per word, a sample proofread can help you account for nuances. You can gauge the work involved and showcase your skills. More errors mean a higher rate. Take a leaf out of Reedsy proofreader Leonora Stewart's book—she sets her rates by averaging edits per page from samples. ⏰ Factor in the deadline: Rush jobs deserve higher rates. For instance, a 10,000-word project typically needs five days. If you can deliver faster, make sure to charge accordingly. Setting clear expectations upfront ensures smooth negotiations and protects your mental health. 👩🏫 Account for your experience: Seasoned proofreaders can charge more, thanks to their expertise in formatting, language rules, and genre-specific conventions. If you offer both U.S. and U.K. English proofreading, that’s another reason to increase your rates. Don’t forget to regularly update your rates as you grow professionally. 👋 Know when to walk away: Some clients may have unrealistic expectations. Stand firm on your rates and back them up with industry knowledge. Most clients will respect your professionalism. Remember, you deserve to be paid fairly for your expertise. 🤑 Curious about how your rates stack up?
