For #MAMonday this week, here's an nice example of helping a paper machine with raised vibration levels: "It’s not only assets such as motors, pumps, and fans that RDI Technologies Inc.'s Motion Amplification® can be used on. It’s great for larger structures and machines too. By filtering the MA videos to different frequencies, we can gain a much deeper understanding of the machine’s motion. Nice example here of a paper machine suffering from raised vibration levels on the wet end section, with levels up to 8 mm/sec on some rolls. Testing with our Emerson's Automation Technologies & Solutions AMS 2140 Analyser and IRIS M™ Motion Amplification® Camera determined a resonance issue at higher machine speeds, excited by the wire rolls (1XRPM). Over the years, increased machine speed for production had taken it further into the resonance range. One common result of running in these resonant ranges is the loosening of holding down bolts, amplifying the problem further. In this case, we recommended checking all base bolts for tightness after reviewing the MA footage, which showed a rocking motion of the machine. Although not a long-term fix, the levels reduced to 3mm/sec RMS, which the site was happy to run with. 💡 For those new to the channel, this Dry Air Fan VA case study by Stuart Walker demonstrates the importance of getting to the root cause! ❓ "What was the last maintenance action or modification carried out on this machine? This is a great question to ask and has served me well over many years when trying to get to the root cause of many machinery problems. 📈 Here is a great example, on the face of it looks like a typical bearing defect developing until you see the jump on the online trend data after a short outage. When we asked the above question the reply was a coupling had been replaced during the shutdown. 🔨 Anything unusual we asked? "Well i did see a contractor hitting the coupling on with a rather large hammer" Classic human intervention! You can just see the brinelling marks on the inner race where the defect initiated too. 📈 For those new to the channel, or the topic of vibration analysis, here's a helpful before-and-after Motor Bearing Damage case study carried out in 2012 by Stuart Walker: 🏭 The Hammer Mill is part of the mashing area on a Bio Ethanol Plant. It mills wheat in preparation for the Bio-Ethanol Process. The Motor is inverter driven (Variable Speed). The spectral analysis showed clear harmonics from 3.05 orders of turning speed. Clear damage on outer race indicating electrical erosion as root cause of bearing damage. 🛠️ Typical faults found during a Motor Analysis service include: cracked or broken rotorbars, electrical erosion, soft foot, variable speed drive card faults (SCR), loose connections. 🔗 See the comments below for a list of helpful resources. #conditionmonitoring #vibrationanalysis #electricalengineering #bioethanol #motors
