💡 "I would say the majority of 1XRPM vibration problems I see on plant are due to issues related to the base and holding down bolts not unbalance or misalignment." - Stuart Walker ⚙️ In this short video, the Iris M™ camera reveals the root cause; in this case, a poor base: "A shiny new section of pipe gives a clue to the past history of these pumps which we had not seen before. Within minutes the Motion Amplification® camera reveals in amazing detail why the pipe section failed and will fail again. The poor base was causing pipe failures and damage to the bearings on the running/standby pumps. 📅 Fortunately its all planned to be replaced to significantly improve reliability. It looked too good to be true. That feeling was short lived having used the technology and quickly realized it was to become one of the most game-changing technologies of the last 25 years. 👀 From a technology very few had heard of we are now starting to get asked by clients that visual vibration is included in the scope of works for contracts. No doubt its biggest benefit has been as a communication tool between Engineers and Managers. Not many Engineers really understand vibration levels and frequency spectrums. But a video visualizing the problem we can all understand is a really powerful tool. 📈 Great example here of a new pump installation which was suffering from raised vibration levels to 10mm/sec RMS at 1xrpm. Not only has the Iris M™ camera exposed poor base security, alignment issues, but a serious issue with the concrete base pad! 💡 In case you missed Stuart Walker’s troubleshooting post this week featuring a newly installed pump with raised vibration levels, here it is again: "🔧Successful Troubleshooting with Multiple Technologies: Vibration Analysis, Modal, and Motion Amplification 🛠️ We recently tackled a challenge involving a newly installed variable speed vertical pump with raised vibration levels. Here’s how we resolved it: 1️⃣ First, I used my Emerson's Automation Technologies & Solutions AMS 2140 vibration analyzer to measure vibrations on the motor and pump at different flow rates over a few hours. Ideally, I would have used the transient program for rapid data capture on a run up, but that wasn't possible in this case, as we had to be gentle with the borehole. 2️⃣ The vibration data revealed an increase in vane pass vibration at higher flow rates, most pronounced horizontally on the pump. As flow rates increased further, the vane pass vibration decreased. This data suggested a possible resonance, which I needed to verify. 3️⃣ Enter the Motion Amplification camera from RDI Technologies Inc. – an essential tool for my troubleshooting these days. I set the pump flow rate to where we had the highest vane pass vibration at 4.5mm/sec. Using the IRIS MX camera from RDI Technologies, I captured a large field of view and filtered the footage to the vane pass frequency at 110Hz. This allowed me to see exactly how the pump was moving. We immediately noticed the base flexing, indicating a potential lack of stiffness. The engineers confirmed that the base had not been grouted correctly and needed rectifying 🚨 4️⃣ To finalise the test and confirm the suspected resonance, I used my Emerson 2140 and a Modal hammer to conduct an impact test with the pump offline. This worked perfectly and showed that the pump casing had a natural frequency of 117.5 Hz, which was been excited by the vane pass frequency during operation. 🛠️ The base was eventually re-grouted, which stiffened the pump resulting in a 70% drop in vibration levels! 🔧" See the comment below for a list of helpful resources. #motionamplification #vibrationanalysis #reliabilityengineering #pumps #motors #modal #resonance

🔍 For those new to the channel, here's an insightful Vibration Analysis case study by Stuart Walker from 2012. The study focuses on a critical component of an Animal Feeds Dryer Plant, the Gas Recycle Fan, and its crucial role in the system's operation. ⚠️ During a routine check, the fan began to reveal something alarming: an unexpected increase in vibration levels within the 3-4XRPM band on the motor's NDE horizontal reading.
