For patients, fertility clinic websites are one of their first sources of information. For clinics, websites are their store window, in which they want to present their services in the best light possible. But what role do you think fertility clinic websites should play? How can #fertility professionals support their patients and inform them about their options regarding time-lapse videos? In this short animation, we break down our research into the critical issues surrounding how IVF embryo development videos are received by patients. We have found that most IVF patients do not know how to interpret embryo development or understand what the video means for their particular case and treatment. If you’re interested in sharing this video with your patients, get in touch. Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/eCbicZ7t #IVF

I am delighted to share the culmination of a decade of work in my new open access book, "Biomedical Innovation in Fertility Care: Evidence Challenges, Commercialization, and the Market for Hope". In this book, I explore the often-debated treatment add-ons as examples of the biomedical innovation model in fertility care, examining how evidence-based medicine intersects with a highly commercialised sector. One of the central themes I discuss is the concept of a 'hope market', where the potential of new treatments can sometimes outweigh the evidence. This market, largely unregulated, can put significant pressure on patients, turning them into consumers faced with difficult treatment decisions. If you're interested, the book is freely available here: https://lnkd.in/eZSw3VD7 I am deeply grateful to all who supported me throughout this journey: the Wellcome Trust and The British Academy for their generous support, all my collaborators, and the patients and professionals who shared their insights with us. This work would not have been possible without your invaluable contributions. #hopemarket #fertilitycare #biomedicalinnovation #IVFaddons #newbook Bristol University Press and Policy Press Paul Stevens

How can we empower patients to make well-informed decisions within an increasingly commercialised market? Earlier this year, we invited a range of participants to discuss the importance of cost transparency when making informed decisions. Workshop participants underscored the importance of providing precise written information about treatment costs to enhance patients’ informed decision-making and consent. Several participants stressed that patients should have the opportunity to take this information home, fostering open discussions with others, including fertility counsellors and individuals within their social networks, before committing to treatment. This information should include signposting to reliable sources such as the NHS and the HFEA and include an average cost list from authoritative sources to facilitate comparison.
