  • Some interesting statistics: ISO: 31000 Risk Management - first of all, establish the context: More ski ing activity due to more snow. A total of 3,570 people found themselves in an emergency situation in the Swiss mountains last year, SAC reported. Although the number was slightly higher than the previous year, it was also slightly lower than the figures for 2021 and 2022. In mountain sports in the narrower sense, a total of 111 people lost their lives in 93 accidents, according to the report. The proportion of foreign casualties fell compared to the previous year, but was still high at almost 50%. Last summer, 36 people also lost their lives while hiking in the mountains. According to SAC, this was the lowest number in ten years. However, mountain hikers and climbers had to be rescued more frequently due to blockages or exhaustion. https://lnkd.in/efgytexu Thank you 🙏 alan for the share !

A drug used to treat rare genetic disorders also makes human blood lethal to mosquitoes, new research led by Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine shows. Nitisinone, a medication already used to treat rare genetic disorders like tyrosinemia type 1, blocks an essential enzyme mosquitoes need to digest their blood meal, resulting in rapid death. The new findings, published in Science Translational Medicine, represent a major advancement in the fight against malaria, offering a promising new vector control strategy at a critical time when growing insecticide resistance threatens global disease management progress. Dr Lee Haines, first author, Honorary Fellow at LSTM and now Associate Research Professor at the University of Notre Dame, said: “What makes nitisinone so exciting is its novel mode of action against blood-feeding insects like mosquitoes. Unlike conventional insecticides that target the mosquito’s nervous system, nitisinone targets an entirely different biological pathway in mosquitoes, which offers a new option for managing the growing problem of insecticide resistance”. This important study has been covered in The Independent, National Geographic and elsewhere. Learn more: https://lstm.ac/nitisinone.

  • #Adventureracing #Riskmanagement #Pushpastimpossible Last week, we ran the latest instalment of our unique remote area risk management course. We always get a fascinating mix on these courses - the course is richer for it. The course was full. One of the delegates was from The Yukon1000 race management. This is the worlds longest paddling race. Very remote, very challenging. Remarkable. Clearly very knowledgeable and with a robust and pragmatic approach to risk management, it was a genuine pleasure to have the delegate on the course - amongst a really great group of delegates. Lots of fascinating case studies from the delegates (and lots of flattering feedback), to support the case studies delivered by us as part of the course. Bouncing ideas and opinions around a very experienced peer group has a huge value. A documentary was just released covering The Yukon 1000. ‘Push Past Impossible’ on Prime video. It’s excellent. It’s also a great watch in terms of practical risk management in remote areas. It’s so good I’ve watched it twice and will again. Some famous faces including Mike Stroud. Tells you everything you need to know. A real challenge. A huge achievement - for both competitors and the organisers behind it. We’ve been involved in training staff from multiple cutting edge adventure racing organisations - including those operating around the globe- in all sorts of environments - both in remote area medical and remote area risk management. Pushing Past Impossible beautifully demonstrates that Risk Management is the Art of the Possible - an enabling tool assisting organisations and individuals to achieve outcomes, not stifling the Possible. Proper Prior Planning Prevents …. Poor Performancez We’d love to provide a link to the next ‘open’ delivery of the course … it’s in June … but it’s sold out already, with a mix of fascinating delegates and then a University taking all the remaining places. https://lnkd.in/e-xuPbv December dates are up. We deliver lots of private courses. We’re adding new dates very soon. Private courses available. Schistosomiasis affects tens of millions worldwide, yet major challenges remain in its control. Professor Russell Stothard (Stothard Russell), Dr Dora Buonfrate, and colleagues have just published The Lancet Group’s latest landmark seminar paper on the disease, providing the most comprehensive review of nearly two decades of research. These papers are updated just once a decade, making this the definitive resource on schistosomiasis for years to come. Watch the video to learn more or read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/eQYM5na8. #Schistosomiasis #NTDs #GlobalHealth #Research

🐍 Groundbreaking Research into Snakebite Therapy 🐍 We're excited to share an innovative project from the University of Bristol, and European consortium partners to meet the global anti-venom crisis. As highlighted by the World Health Organization snakebite is a neglected tropical disease which needs group action. We're developing a bioengineered therapy that could offer unprecedented effectiveness, without the risk of serum sickness (a common side effect of traditional antivenoms). Even better; because it should be more effective, it would need fewer doses. 💡 Other reasons it could be a game-changer: ✅ Scalable and affordable - bioengineering allows for easier, cost-effective production ✅ Accessible where it's needed most - no refrigeration required ✅ Potential for rapid response - could be delivered via a device similar to an EpiPen While it’s still in development, this therapy could be a life-saver for the communities most affected by snakebites. See the full film https://brnw.ch/21wRz9a and follow us for more updates on the project. The Addovenom Project is an international consortium between the University of Bristol, in partnership with Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine Université de Liège Aix-Marseille University and iBET - Instituto de Biologia Experimental e Tecnológica

  • Climb 2 Recovery: an amazing Veterans Charity. Check out their new documentary short video. Inspiring, impressive. An organisation doing great work. We’re delighted to have been chosen to provide training on medical and risk management subjects to staff members going back a number of years and continuing to this day. https://lnkd.in/eThBHsyv Donate. Support. Supporting Veteran’s organisations. It’s a privilege to work with the varied clients we do. From elite military to leading expedition companies, Government Agencies to disaster response organisations and aid organisations/ NGO’s. We’re very proud of the difference we make across the Globe, with our fit the purpose, sector leading Professional level training and Consultancy. We are particularly proud and privileged to work with veterans organisations and those working with large numbers of Veterans and military families, as well as supporting military and military expedition teams with our unique and specialist training. Whether we are working with disaster response organisations (with significant veteran numbers in their ranks) to train their staff in medical and risk management considerations, to work at altitude, austere environments, heat, cold etc or enabling veteran organisations to run charity events safely, to raise funds, boosting the mental health of participants or other considerations, it’s a real privilege for us - and we see it as just that. We take our responsibility towards those who Serve and have Served … in line with our status as a signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant … very seriously. With a significant number of veterans on our Faculty and very strong historical military links, we also see the huge benefit for Faculty members in what we call ‘getting back into the green’ - meaning the green surroundings of our International Centre for Remote Area Medicine, based at the National Outdoor Centre. It also signifies the peace and mental health benefits that the location and camaraderie of the Faculty brings. This special ‘Haven’ has benefitted many Faculty and clients.
