‘A place to Relax, Recharge, Remember, Rebuild, built on an army of love and compassion’ - REUBEN'S LEGACY

About us

Reuben's Retreat is a registered charity in the North West of England. We were born from the tragic loss of Reuben Michael Graham at just 23 months old from an inoperable brain tumour. Our mission is to provide practical, social and emotional support to families who have a child living with medical complexities and families of child loss. We provide peer led monthly support groups, holistic therapies, meditation evenings, weekend rambles and one to one counselling for parents and siblings as well as regular music, art and animal therapy, bespoke memory making events and respite breaks for children with additional needs, complex illnesses and limited life spans. We are a small team with a big vision supported by an army of volunteers. In 2014, we purchased Woods Hospital on Howard Park, Glossop and have been renovating in stages ever since. In 2017, we completed the first 3 phases, ‘The Lodge at Reuben’s’ and our counselling & bereavement support centre opened. we have recently completed phases 4 to 6, our 'activity wing'. A fully accessible facility housing a hydrotherapy pool with changing suite, sensory room with cinema area and playroom with chill zone. The remaining phases will include 3 fully accessible apartments and two upper floor apartments for families to create special memories together. Our ambitious build project when finished, will be our forever home, a safe haven for families to access our support. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. 💙12💙 12 years since I promised Reuben that I would ensure that a small piece of our world would be better in his name. I do believe that we all have the ability to leave our world a better place than we found it. 12 years since we saw our first #23, launching our cause (by accident) on social media, he pressed the button, it was time …. In 12 years we have supported in excess of 1700 people and as we share today over 700+ are being actively supported 🙏 In 12 years we have completed 6 ambitious phases of our multi million pound 10 phase renovation 🙏 In 12 years we have fundraised sufficiently to operate, execute our build projects and support all these amazing hearts 🙏 In 12 years my grief, my miss for my boy is still very much evident and my grief and my love for Reuben continue to drive me and inspire me to deliver the best we can 🙏 Thank you to every single member of our RRHQ team past, present and future 🙏 Thank you to every heart that has donated and gifted their time 🙏 Thank you to every person that has trusted us on their unique journey of support 🙏 12 years have passed in the blink of an eye and Reuben continues to teach me more than I ever knew, or thought was possible. Thank you 🙏 Mummy xx

💙I have a beautiful story to share💙 12 years of #miss since our boy left this earthly plain and made his home in the “somewhere out there” and started to deliver #angelswork. Some weeks ago, via our dear friend Lianne, Isaac and I contributed to a “Daily Telegraph” article about “sibling grief”. https://lnkd.in/ekS87WqH In the article, we reference my brief encounter with a palliative care nurse named Francis at that “final” meeting about removing Reuben’s life support. In his line “what about Isaac, he will survive this” he taught me more than I could ever know …. This line would shape my future relationship with Isaac (as this was about to change dramatically) and would also be hugely impactful on the valuable work we do today with families after the loss of their child. Soon after the article was published, after a link was shared across the winds of time to a gentle soul in retirement ….. a new follow popped up on our “X”.. spotted by Stacey, we had been “found” and it all felt very special. Francis and I have reconnected ……………. Today I share with you these words from him, that touched my soul and sent tears trickling down my face. How fortunate we were 12 years ago to receive such guidance …….. "Nicola, I want to share a poem I have adapted and if I had been able to attend Reuben’s funeral I would have read. It comes from a book called ‘Blessings’ by John O'Donohue. He speaks to a deep place within us all, but not always discovered." No one knows the wonder Reuben’ awoke in you, Your hearts a perfect cradle To hold its presence, Inside and outside became one As new waves of love Kept surprising your soul. Now you sit bereft Inside a nightmare, Your eyes numbed By the sight of a coffin No parent should ever see You will wear this absence Like a secret locket, Always wondering why Such a new soul Was taken home so soon. Let the silent tears flow And when your eyes clear Perhaps you will glimpse How your eternal child Reuben Has become the unseen angel Who now parents your heart and soul And persuades the moon To send new gifts ashore Today I dedicate my post to my darling boy, that has taught me so very much and to every compassionate soul, like Francis, that makes their life’s work about helping others. You are a remarkable human Francis, and I am so grateful that you were on shift this day Tuesday the 21st of August, 2012. Mummy x

💙We were held from day one...💙 Proud to know the love, support and friendship of this team of champion hearts. On the 14th of August 2012, whilst camping in Devon, the day Reuben was admitted and later air-lifted, we leant on the support of those we needed. Not knowing how much we would need them in the coming days, weeks, months, and years …. This would become key support for many years to come, not just for our family, but for the many families we are so honoured to serve today. Back in 2012 Mike worked for Celebrity Cruises. His team were there for us every step of the way and we were held from day one. Yesterday, it was no surprise that after some last-minute changes, 23 of them arrived to “give a day back” and to leave their energies once again at our Retreat. Beautiful signs that are meant to be ……. To date, this special team of kind hearts and generous souls have raised a staggering £48,920 and made a huge impact to the work we do to support families after child loss and families whose children may face an uncertain future, we are incredibly grateful 🙏 Thank you TEAM CELEBRITY CRUISES past, present and future. For all that you give, gift and continue to do for us on a daily basis. Yesterday my heart was full to see you all around our tables and to share in your magic. We love you guys and our mighty travel industry are absolutely amazing! Much love from us all xxx Mummy 💙
