Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism
Research Services
Exploring the future of journalism worldwide through engagement, debate and research. Based at University of Oxford.
About us
The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, established in autumn 2006, is based at the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Oxford. The Thomson Reuters Foundation has supported a programme of visiting fellowships for journalists from around the world based at what is now Green Templeton College in Oxford since 1983. The RISJ builds on this tradition and is now a university research centre for international comparative journalism. Anchored in the recognition of the key role of independent media in open societies and the power of information in the modern world, the Institute aims to serve as the leading forum for a productive engagement between scholars from a wide range of disciplines and the practitioners of journalism. It brings the depth and rigour of academic scholarship of the highest standards to major issues of relevance to the world of practice of news media. It is global in its perspective and in the content of its activities. Its expanded activities include short-term and long-term research projects, a regular series of seminars, workshops, annual conferences, debates and innovative curricular development, both independently and in meaningful collaboration with other centres in Oxford University and with the global world of practice.

📰 NEW on our website: With print being on life-support in many countries, Gretel Kahn spoke with the editors of two titles in North America that have shunned the pivot to digital altogether and just kept printing: Dave Bidini from Canada’s West End Phoenix, a monthly publication in Toronto, and Dan Jacobson from U.S.’ TriCity News, a weekly newspaper published in New Jersey. The former requires a subscription while the latter is distributed for free. A key quote. "The nature of just really spending time with the work that a writer or an artist has produced can be valuable to the reader beyond what we absorb online every day," says Bidini, who's also the leader of a rock band. "It’s just getting people to unplug, sit back and take that time out of their day to read their news differently and spend their time holding something." https://lnkd.in/eY9mNWpY
These two local newspapers shunned the Internet and focused entirely on print. Here's why

We need clarity about the deals between AI companies and news publishers, argues our researcher Felix M. Simon in a new essay we publish today 2024 has been deal-making time for AI companies and news publishers. According to data from the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University - Graduate School of Journalism, at least 26 international publishers have struck licensing deals with AI companies. These deals are undoubtedly good for both sides, at least in the short term. But what might be good for the parties involved isn’t necessarily beneficial to either industry or society at large. ✍️ Despite the growing number of agreements, the exact conditions of these deals are shrouded in mystery. Felix argues that we need more clarity about these deals. Without any knowledge of the details, he writes, it is difficult to independently assess if the terms of these deals are fair or to set industry standards. A key quote from the piece. "Without a better understanding of the details of these agreements, regulators and policy-makers cannot accurately assess the benefits and downsides of these partnerships and the wider shape of the transforming information ecosystem, nor the wider ramifications for society."
