Alternative BESS technologies growing in prominence 2024 looks likely to become the peak year for lithium-ion market share within BESS, set to reach 92%. In the coming years, this percentage is set to fall as alternative technologies start to be deployed at greater volumes. Sodium-ion and vanadium flow batteries are the most advanced of these alternative technologies, with activity almost entirely focused in China for now. Other technologies like zinc-flow, metal-air have potential to become prominent for longer duration, whereas technologies like zinc-ion can be used for high power applications and UPS. 🚗 European Commission Revises Chinese EV Tariffs... Again! 🚗 The European Commission has made significant adjustments to the provisional tariffs on Chinese imported EVs after receiving feedback from various stakeholders. Notably, these revisions include: 🏭Reduced tariffs for the sampled manufacturers, such as SAIC, Geely, and BYD. 🔋Tesla has been assigned its own lower tariff rate. 🚢 Introduction of a "New Exporter" tariff rate, set at the same level as cooperating but unsampled OEMs. 💶 No retroactive collection: The Commission has confirmed that duties will not be collected retroactively. We’ve surpassed 5,000 projects in our BESS database! Over 1TWh of projects are currently being tracked globally, with over 5,400 lines of data providing critical insight into the energy storage projects being deployed around the world. We have also expanded the metrics covered by the BESS database to allow users to accurately identify project pipeline timelines and key stakeholders in the value chain. Swipe to see our new and improved columns!   In July 2024, just over 16GWh entered operation across 98 projects, a y-o-y increase of 24%. China has shown backed up June’s impressive deployment rate, commissioning over 13GWh of BESS assets for two consecutive months. The YTD deployed figure globally now sits at 73.5GWh.
