Enriching lives through horses

About us

RDA is a UK based national charity that provides opportunities for people with disabilities to get meaningful and lasting therapy and health benefits from riding and carriage driving. A key part of the work is also to recognise and celebrate the achievenent of the participants and this lead to success from small steps forweard to going all the way to winning a Paralympic Gold medal. We work through a network of 500 centres acorss the UK and rely on the input of volunteers at all of these centres. Over 30,000 people of all ages currently benefit from the activity, but we know that for each of these people there are about another 4 people on a waiting list. We are desperately trying to change this and although we have expanded by a third since 2009, we need more suppport and more volunteers to make this change. We need volunteers of all backgrounds and with a variety of skills - not only those with experience of horses. Whatever you do, we'll provide all the training and suppport you need. If you want to talk through some of the options, get in touch. Go on! Get involved and help make a massive change to someone's life.

Updates

  • At RDA, our equine friends are at the heart of everything we do, which is why their welfare and well-being are our top priorities. Each year, we proudly present a new, fitted saddle to a deserving horse or pony from a different RDA group. This year's Jubilee Saddle, generously provided by The Worshipful Company Of Saddlers, was gifted to Grey Jack (also known as Crackerjack), an endearing Connemara pony from Causeway Coast and Glens RDA in Northern Ireland! We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Worshipful Company of Saddlers, Frank Baines Saddlery LTD for crafting the bespoke saddle, and to Steph Bradley from Freedom Saddlery for ensuring the perfect fit. Grey Jack is indeed a very lucky boy!

  • ‘What the World Needs Now Is Love’ - a timeless, iconic song and a message of hope for everyone ❤️ £1.4billion going to charities from players of People's Postcode Lottery is a lot of love in these turbulent times.   RDA is one of seven charities to feature in this new campaign to thank players of People’s Postcode Lottery for their incredible support and showcase the amazing difference they are making in our communities. • Three-quarters (76%) of disabled people would like to be more active. Riding for the Disabled Association activities, including our upcoming virtual championships, help break down the barriers that prevent people from enjoying the therapeutic benefits of horses, and equestrian sport. #disabilityinclusion

With the RDA Virtual Championships just weeks away, let’s dive into WHY this event is so special...   People take part in RDA activities for lots of different reasons – from staying physically active; to boosting their mental wellbeing; to becoming part of a supportive community and having fun! Each has their unique goals, and not everyone is focused on competition.   Participating in a grassroots event is a fantastic way to build skills, gain confidence, and experience a sense of achievement. Our Virtual Championships have classes for people of all abilities.   Traveling to competitions can be stressful, costly, and sometimes simply unfeasible. Our Virtual Championships provide an accessible opportunity for people to get involved, no matter where they are! #RDAVNC24

  • Thank you to The Racing Foundation for hosting such a thought-provoking conference exploring social licence, featuring speakers from within and without the sector, bringing a range of perspectives together!   RDA’s CEO, Michael Bishop, discussed the importance of finding social relevance to help more people connect with horses, drawing on lessons from his previous experience in the heritage sector. Bob Langert, former Vice President of CSR and Sustainability at McDonald’s, shared insights from outside the sector on the potential for transformative change. Roly Owers, World Horse Welfare, and Dominic Matcham, Founder and Managing Director of INVADES, explored new data on public perceptions of horse sports, and explored how social licence plays in to attracting the next generation of racegoers respectively. A really inspiring youth panel discussed social license bringing the Gen Z perspective! 👏   The key takeways from this session, were the need to think differently about how we create a more positive narrative around the use of horses; as well as the importance of collaboration and taking small actions for continual change and improvement.

  • Last Monday, we were delighted to welcome a group of corporate volunteers from NFU Mutual to our National Office for a 'Volunteering Day.' Despite the challenging weather outside, the team pivoted their efforts to provide a thorough clean of our indoor arena and expertly raked the waxed surface in preparation for participant sessions later that evening. The day wouldn’t have been complete without a special visit from one of our incredible horses! A big thank you to the Product team members who generously gave their time. It was a pleasure to meet you all, and we hope we’ve inspired you to continue supporting RDA. 💚

  • Exciting to see the latest Activity Alliance research published today, providing an in-depth look at how disabled people engage with sport and physical activity, and providing organisations, including RDA, with valuable insight as we continue to develop opportunities for more inclusive sport and physical activity.
