“Mining is considered a noble profession in my home country of Ghana in West Africa," David, Principal Geotechnical Adviser at our Boron Operations in California, US, says. "Our chiefs and traditional rulers wear gold chains and rings during our festivals, and mining is a solid industry with good salaries. So I knew I wanted to become an engineer from a young age. We all have one goal – to keep the workforce safe. I don't want any injuries on my watch. Mining is a big hole in the ground, with high walls that we must keep stable. We monitor the high walls using instrumentation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so we can let the workforce know if anything is moving to avoid equipment damage, injuries, or worst of all, fatalities. Our approach has been successful and we haven’t had an incident in more than 11 years." David's work keeps our mines, people and surrounding communities safe during excavations and earthquakes. 👉 Read about the earthquake early-warning system he developed: https://lnkd.in/edXm2t74 #FindingBetterWays #Seismology #Engineering

Finding better ways to provide the materials the world needs. #FindingBetterWays
About us
We're finding better ways to provide the materials the world needs. Iron ore for steel. Low carbon aluminium for electric cars and smartphones. Copper for wind turbines, electric cars and the pipes that bring water to our home. Borates that help crops grow and titanium for paint.

Few materials are as important to our everyday lives as copper. It's tough but malleable, corrosion-resistant and recyclable. And did we mention copper is an excellent conductor of heat and transmitter of electricity? Have a look to see how copper is used. 🎞️👇 #FindingBetterWays #Copper

We rely on renewable and non-renewable electricity to power our mines, processing plants and supporting infrastructure. More than 70% of the electricity we use is from renewable sources, and that is set to rise with investment in more renewable energy projects. We’re on a path to net zero emissions from our operations by 2050. #FindingBetterWays #Decarbonisation #RenewableEnergy

"While studying and working at a local pizza shop, I first heard about data science from my colleague discussing his traffic optimisation project. I was intrigued by the value of statistics and data, I decided to change my degree to explore the field further." Alexia said. "As the President of the UWA Data Science Club, I had an opportunity to visit Tom Price [an iron ore site based in Western Australia]. This was my first introduction to the mining industry, a path no one in my family had pursued. I started my time at Rio Tinto as a vacation student, where I worked on a Computer Vision project that predicted the type of ore at a car dumper. In my final year of study, Rio supported me as an intern, which allowed me travel regularly to other sites to collaborate with the Geo Metallurgy team on advanced predictive regression modeling. This year, I transitioned into a Graduate role in Information Services and Technology (IS&T) team. I support large-scale architectural projects capable of integrating raw production datasets from multiple sites, sources and systems. Our goal is to facilitate operational data needs and enable integrated decision making to drive business outcomes. Ensuring data integrity is crucial, because as we know Garbage in = Garbage out! My next rotation will use simulation and modeling to develop strategies to increase ore production at Marandoo. The Graduate Program has offered me structured rotations which has been amazing to broaden my technical, professional and personal development. Another bonus is the social nature and network you build with other inspiring grads from different disciplines. The scale of Rio Tinto’s operations is enormous - the Pilbara is the geographical size of Spain. It’s an incredibly exciting career, as you get to implement innovative solutions across the supply chain and work with different problems, technologies and people. I have embraced the mindset of continuous improvement and adaptability. It’s essential to be comfortable with not knowing everything but being curious and willing to learn. I feel very fortunate to work at Rio.” ✏️See where are role at Rio Tinto could take you: https://lnkd.in/gFmiFS_X

Diesel consumption makes up around 12% of our total operational emissions. That's why we're developing a pilot pongamia seed farm in Queensland, Australia to explore the potential of pongamia seeds as a sustainable renewable diesel feedstock. While electrification technology matures, biofuels are an immediate way to reduce our reliance on fossil diesel fuels. Here are 3 reasons why we’re investing in pongamia trees to help make the switch from diesel to renewable diesel: 🌱 Pongamia trees absorb and store carbon dioxide during their growth, and produce seeds that can be harvested to make biofuel. This creates a lower carbon cycle when the resulting biofuel is combusted for energy, meaning we could emit less carbon when powering our trucks with renewable diesel made from pongamia. 🌱 They are renewable because they produce new seeds every year, and the thousands of seeds they produce are rich in oil content, meaning we can extract about four tonnes of oil from every hectare annually, while the trees remain in the ground. 🌱 They can grow in challenging environments because of the friendly bacteria that live in their tree roots. These bacteria turn nitrogen from the air into food for the tree while improving soil health. Investing in biofuels like renewable diesel is one of many ways we’re making progress towards net zero emissions from our operations by 2050. #biofuel #decarbonisation #FindingBetterWays
