🌍 Several of the Ripple Africa team visited Mangochi District last week. Within the District is Lake Malawi National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where we not only support Parks and Wildlife to protect cichlids, but are also helping protect trees by building fuel-efficient cookstoves and efficient fish processing ovens. 🐠 These projects are vital to protecting fish species and trees. 🎣 Our local team members work with the Parks and Wildlife team to educate those living in the National Park about the importance of protecting the cichlid fish, many found nowhere else in the world. Although these are not usually caught as food, fishers often used them as bait to catch other species - these are declining because of overfishing as in other parts of the lake. 🌳 Deforestation is a serious problem in the National Park too, as people living in local villages collect firewood to cook their own food and for their fish processing businesses. 👏 However, with our fuel-efficient cookstoves and the Changu Changu Moto Oven, locals will no longer need to cut trees down as they will be able to use only branches and twigs as fuel. . . . #fishconservation #fishfortomorrow #fish #fishing #fishermen #fishingnets #futuregenerations #livelihoods #LakeMalawi #conservation #environment #sustainabledevelopment #malawi #africa #rippleafrica

🌍 COP 29 (the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change), starts today in Baku, Azerbaijan. ☀️ With global temperatures hitting record highs, and extreme weather events affecting people around the globe, COP 29 will bring together world leaders and ministers to negotiate and agree plans to jointly address climate change and its impacts. 💰 COP 29 has been dubbed the 'finance COP' as trillions of dollars are required for countries to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect lives and livelihoods from the worsening impacts of climate change including developing countries' needs and priorities. 📺 Did you see our Climate Change Impact video recently? 🎣 Malawians depend on Lake Malawi as it is a source of food and income in a country with limited job prospects. 🐟 With humble beginnings, protecting only 40km of lakeshore in 2011, the Fish for Tomorrow Fish Conservation project currently protects 736km of lakeshore in five Districts. 📺 This film highlights the importance of protecting fish stocks for future generations: https://lnkd.in/eaNjEY3w . . . #fishconservation #fishfortomorrow #fish #fishing #fishermen #fishingnets #futuregenerations #livelihoods #LakeMalawi #conservation #environment #sustainabledevelopment #malawi #africa #rippleafrica

🐖 Another Fruit Tree Club has been able to save enough money from the sale of chickens, to buy a pig and start their pig farm. ⭐ Busy building a house for their pig, Mchaya Club members are extremely happy that their farm is expanding. 🐤 Other Clubs have been learning about protecting their chickens from disease and parasites, an important topic as healthy chickens mean more money. 👏 Maston said, "The Clubs are growing vegetables to purchase their chicks and many of the Clubs are able to sell vegetables to the local boarding schools and at the local trading centres. Generating income through small scale businesses is achievable." . . . #farming #vegetables #allotment #nutrition #agriculture #income #chickens #pigs #communitydevelopment #sustainabledevelopment #Malawi #africa #rippleafrica

🗓️ September marked the end of the first year of our Reading Club and it has been an opportunity not only for the children attending our sessions, but for our team too as they developed and the sessions evolved. 📖 In line with the academic year we introduced weekly afternoon classes in five different villages in September 2023. ⭐ The aim was to provide an additional learning space to bridge the English-learning gap for predominantly those in Standards 1 to 4. It is also an opportunity to encourage children to explore books. 👏 Across the year we welcomed 287 students. ⭐ We tend to share stories of how the projects we run are positively impacting communities in Malawi. ⛈️ However, over the past couple of years, we have had to run numerous emergency appeals as a result of cyclones and storms affecting Malawi. 🌍 This year was no different, Malawi was hit by more drought and floods. 🌽 The impact of climate change in Malawi is real, and for a country with more than 80% of people living in rural areas, farming is their means of survival. 📺 We hope this short film highlights the climate challenges facing Malawi: https://lnkd.in/esBWUnKJ 🤝 And encourages you to take action against climate change today: https://lnkd.in/ejyERaqU . . . #takeclimateaction #climatechange #climateaction #flooding #drought #storms #farming #farmers #helpMalawi #livelihoods #Malawi #Africa #RippleAfrica
