We are delighted that Museums Galleries Scotland Museum Development Fund will help support our project Saving the Home of Auld Lang Syne. The MDF will be used to support an interpretation plan for the site and an experienced curator to work with the design team on the conservation and adaptation of the farmhouse and steading much of which was built by and for Robert Burns. They will also develop our approach to caring for our collection of manuscripts and items belonging to Burns and his family. The news of this award follows on our success in securing funding for the project from The National Lottery Heritage Fund South of Scotland Enterprise #scottishmuseums #scotlandsmuseums

We are very grateful to South of Scotland Enterprise and Richard Lochhead for this vote of confidence in our plan to Save the Home of Auld Lang Syne. This allows us to commission a conservation architect led team to adapt and restore the site. It complements the significant support we have received from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to advance the development stage of the project which will include a major fundraising campaign, an events programme and measures to strengthen our charity for the task ahead! We are also grateful to our long term supporters The Holywood Trust and The Architectural Heritage Fund for helping us reach this point.

Meet Ailsa Paton, the newest member of our team here at Ellisland. Ailsa, who is from Dumfries, will deliver our events, youth and education initiatives as well as supporting the day to day running of the site and our visitor offer.

Happy New Year to all our followers. Ellisland is the place where Robert Burns wrote what was to become the New Year Anthem, Auld Lang Syne. Based on an old Scottish song, Burns’s lyric is a poignant reflection on love, friendship and loss which still touches people today around the world. There are versions by Frank Sinatra and Mariah Carey as well as our traditional Scottish renditions. It’s great that the song is global. We are now a Zine! Ellisland’s forgotten stories are retold in a brand new collaboration with young local artists in the The Stove Network . Creative Spaces artists James Gough and Korey Patterson have worked alongside our Museum Officer, Adam Dickson and young volunteer, Logan Fry to bring to life some unique stories from our temporary exhibition ‘Beyond Burns’. Our research into the people who lived and worked at Ellisland uncovered fascinating human stories. Some fought in far off wars, others were imprisoned for poverty related crimes. This brand new collaboration project aims to bring these stories to light, celebrating the lives of forgotten workers and providing a new perspective on Ellisland’s past. Zines can be purchased for £1 at the Stove Cafe’s ‘Midwinter Exhibition’. This runs until Saturday, 21st December, with pieces available for purchase during regular cafe hours (Monday - Saturday, 9am–3pm). Don’t worry if you can’t make it down to the Midwinter Exhibition! You can pick one up from Ellisland for £1 each (Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm). We are delighted that our chair of trustees, Duncan Dornan, has now been announced at the chair of Museums Galleries Scotland. Duncan recently retired from his leadership role at Glasgow Life where he was responsible for museums and galleries - including the redevelopment of The Burrell. He has a long and prestigious career in the museum sector, and is the ideal person to steer The Robert Burns Ellisland Trust through an exciting period as we embark on our Saving the Home of Auld Lang Syne project, which is supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
