We are the UK's national museum of arms and armour

About us

The Royal Armouries is the United Kingdom’s national museum of arms and armour, and one of the most important museums of its type in the world. We have a long history, dating back to the Middle Ages. Our celebrated core collection originated in the nation’s working arsenal, which was assembled over many centuries at the Tower of London. The Royal Armouries are heir to one of the oldest deliberately created visitor attractions in the country. Objects were being arranged for display to visitors as early as Queen Elizabeth’s reign in the 16th century. Our collection of about 75,000 items – excluding approximately 2,700 loans to other bodies – is now displayed and housed in our historical home at the White Tower in the Tower of London but also at our purpose-built museum in Leeds, and at Fort Nelson near Portsmouth.

  • We were at the Royal Shakespeare Company today to hear Lisa Nandy, Secretary of State for Department for Culture, Media and Sport, as she made the inaugural Jennie Lee lecture. And what a speech it was, marking the 60th anniversary of the first ever arts white paper, and unlocking £270m of national funding to help support museums, arts and culture. As we near the end of a very busy half-term week, we're delighted to hear that the government are choosing to invest in our museums, including us. This half term, over 100,000 visitors will have enjoyed the Royal Armouries collection across our sites in Leeds, Fort Nelson and the Tower. For many of our youngest visitors, this week will have been their very first visit to a national museum, an opportunity to inspire a lifelong interest in heritage and culture.   A huge thanks to our colleagues who have been working so hard to welcome so many visitors, and good news that our government is choosing to invest in our sector which helps to ensure that audiences can continue to enjoy their visits into the future.

    • Lisa Nandy stood at a lectern before a green screen with the words The Jennie Lee Lecture. She is standing in front of a crowd of people.

We're excited to share that we've partnered with Royal Mail to create 12 stunning stamps celebrating the history and treasures of the Royal Armouries collection.   Eight stamps in the main set show extraordinary examples of armour made between 1520 and 1686 which were owned by monarchs, including King Henry VIII, King Charles I, King Charles II and King James II. A further four stamps presented in a miniature sheet show a rare sword and scabbard from the Ming dynasty, c.1420; an ornately decorated flintlock gun by Simpson of York, c.1738; a Japanese helmet from the Edo period, c.1680 and a European sword bearing Arabic inscriptions, c.1365–1432.   Our Senior Licensing and Partnerships Manager, Jack Wanstall, explains: ‘The Royal Armouries is delighted to be working in partnership with Royal Mail to showcase a selection of objects from our collection of over 75,000 pieces of history.
