About us

Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service provides prevention, protection and response services across the county of Berkshire. 12 wholetime and six on-call fire stations cover 486 square miles, from Langley in the East to Lambourn in the West. It serves a diverse cultural population of 905,800, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The role of RBFRS within local communities is evolving. A wide range of services help keep communities safe, including safety and protection advice to residents and businesses, as well as enforcing fire safety legislation and reducing fire risk in the built environment. This is in addition to highly skilled crews providing a swift and effective response to incidents ranging from road, rail, aviation and waterway accidents, to fuel and chemical spills, collapsed buildings, large animal rescues and, of course, fires. RBFRS is under the direction of a combined Royal Berkshire Fire Authority, which is made up of representatives from the county’s six unitary authorities. RBFRS also works alongside Thames Valley Police, South Central Ambulance Service, Public Health, and other public service providers in Berkshire. In doing so, it is helping to contribute to the overall safety of the communities it serves, whilst still providing a value-for-money service to the local taxpayer. Berkshire and Reading Fire Brigade was formed in 1948 and was later renamed in 1974 to Royal Berkshire Fire Brigade. The organisation was established following centuries of evolution in firefighting strategy across the UK and renamed Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service in 1985. The fire service was then removed from local authority control in 1998 and was placed under the direction of an independent Royal Berkshire Fire Authority – which is made up of representatives from the county’s six unitary authorities.

  • We are delighted to announce that two staff members from Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service, Ellece Ott and Joanna Herring, are taking part in an upcoming Arctic expedition with the Fire Angel Foundation! In February 2025, the pair will be travelling to Umea in Sweden where they will brave icy temperatures that can reach -15c. They have already begun their training, learning survival tactics for the snow. The Fire Angel Foundation provides extraordinary experiences for young women, offering immersive training for adventurous journeys that builds self-confidence, develops leadership skills, and finds a sense of belonging. The foundation was set up by George and Bex, two firefighters who completed an expedition to the South Pole in January 2024. In doing so, they became the first emergency services team to traverse Antarctica and pioneer a new route totalling 1,230km. “We were both really inspired by George and Bex during their expedition to the South Pole”, says Ellece. “It's going to be a real test to our resilience and to see what we are capable of! I’m so proud to be a part of the foundation and can’t wait to see the doors we can help open for Fire Cadets”. Jo says: “I’m ecstatic to be chosen for this Arctic expedition. The goal is to empower women and show that they are capable of doing amazing things”. We will be sharing their progress throughout their journey, so follow #fireangelexpedition on Instagram, Facebook, X (formally known as Twitter), and LinkedIn to stay up to date.
