About us
Kingston Council is proud of its reputation as an authority which works with communities to agree priorities and to provide the services that matter most to people. How people feel about a place, and their quality of life, is greatly influenced by its character and sense of community. What is special about the borough of Kingston is the combination of characteristics that amount to a unique offer. As a place we have been a destination of choice throughout our history. And our future is as a destination too. As a borough, Kingston is a place where things happen and because of this, people respond positively, whether it’s on an individual basis as residents or visitors, or to invest as a business or as Government.

Councillor Afy Afilaka, Portfolio Holder for Commissioning, Customer Contact and Equalities, emphasises Kingston's commitment to being a safe and welcoming borough for all this National Hate Crime Awareness Week. “As we mark this year’s National Hate Crime Awareness Week (12-19 October), I want to take this opportunity to reaffirm Kingston’s commitment to being a safe and supportive borough for all, where we challenge discrimination in all its forms. “Kingston is one of the safest boroughs in London and we are committed to working with partners to make it even safer for all communities. We recognise that our whole community has a part to play in ensuring hate crime is not tolerated. “Kingston is a place where difference and diversity is celebrated and valued, and we are extremely proud of the richness this brings to life across the borough. “Our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy Inclusive Kingston highlights how we will champion diverse communities and learn from each other as we strive for an even fairer, even safer borough. It also sets out how we work with partners and communities to understand and monitor hate crime and support those affected. “We work with partners such as Kingston Race and Equalities Council (KREC) and the Anti Hate Crime Action Group to tackle discrimination and hate crime and to promote equality of opportunity and strong and positive community relations. “This year Kingston Council and the Anti-Hate Crime Action Group have developed a community pledge which aims to send a clear message that hate will not be tolerated in our borough. We all have a role to play in tackling hate and discrimination, you can learn more and sign up for the pledge here: https://lnkd.in/e_D9ncVw “Kingston is also a place that welcomes everyone. We pride ourselves on providing sanctuary to refugees, asylum seekers, and vulnerable families and are committed to welcoming and including them in the life of the borough. That’s why we are working towards becoming a ‘Borough of Sanctuary’, through the national charity ‘City of Sanctuary’. “So this Hate Crime Awareness Week, please join me reaffirming your commitment to actively working together to challenge all forms of hate by signing our community pledge. And if you or anyone you know has been affected by hate crime, you can find information about how to report it, as well as advice and support if you have been affected, on our website at https://lnkd.in/gNXapufb

This London Trading Standards (LTS) Week, we’re taking the opportunity to highlight the hard work our Trading Standards Team do to make Kingston safer for our residents and to have businesses well regulated. Since April, the team has seized, or had surrendered to them, a total of 4634 non compliant vapes. These vapes did not meet the UK's rigorous safety regulations and have been taken off the market. We have also visited high streets and parades where we’ve been checking shops for pricing labelling and trademark issues. We also removed unsafe electrical equipment and seized counterfeit phone accessories and unsafe toys for destruction and recycling. We joined Kingston Police on a number of visits to shops to test them for sales of age restricted goods, with no sales being made this time. More inspections are planned in the future especially around fireworks night and at Christmas. We also visited local pubs and shops with weights and measures equipment to ensure residents are getting a fair deal. The Kingston Trading Standards Team is determined to rid our shops of dangerous and illegal items, and to make Kingston a fairer place for those businesses that work hard to keep within the law. If you are concerned about a product or service you have purchased, or if you are a business that would like more advice and information visit: https://lnkd.in/eQ5CsCjW #LTSWeek24 #SaferKingston #FairerKingston
