👏 A huge thank you to everyone who attended our Explore symposium this past weekend! It was inspiring to see the building come alive with delegates, speakers, exhibitors, volunteers, and the incredible community this event brings together to celebrate the world of expeditions, fieldwork, and meaningful travel. 🌍 🤝 This weekend marked the 48th year of the event, and as hosts, we're continually moved by the broad range of expertise, backgrounds, and knowledge of those who attend, paired with their generosity in sharing this with others (regardless of experience or stage of planning!) 🗣️💡 With nearly 400 people passing through the building over the weekend, including over 80 speakers presenting on the main stage and in workshops, and 622 Firepot lunches fuelling us, we hope you left feeling inspired, uplifted, motivated, and even more curious about the themes and topics discussed. 📆 If you want to ‘Explore more’, make sure to mark 1-2 November 2025 as the date for next year's weekend! Will we see you there? ✨ #RGSExplore2024

🚰 Many rural communities in Sub-Saharan Africa rely on boreholes and handpumps to access groundwater for their daily water needs. However, up to a third are out of action at any one time. 📑 Research by geographers at University of Oxford investigated the inadequate servicing of local water pumps in sub-Saharan Africa, leading to changes in practice, technology, and policy in the provision of water services in rural Kenya. 📊 Research findings initiated a social enterprise, FundiFix, which deploys ‘smart’ water handpumps and generates real-time data on their use and performance. The enterprise ensures the reliable delivery of around 73,000,000l of drinking water annually. Find out more 👉https://lnkd.in/e2RxH-sZ #UsingGeography

🔦 As part of our research spotlight this month, we're showcasing a piece from Geo: Geography and Environment, exploring infrastructure as both a material and social concept. 💡 Read the full write-up to hear more about Dr Ankit Kumar's research on people’s improvisation of infrastructure in India. To capture these improvisational acts, Ankit’s new paper proposes the idea of jugaad infrastructure through the example of the design and versatility of solar lamps. 🗣️ Here's an excerpt: "If jugaad infrastructure is likely to exist across the globe, what does this mean for people’s daily lives? Ankit’s exploration of solar lamps demonstrates how jugaad infrastructure can empower people, enabling them to improvise infrastructure to better suit their lives, rather than buying more products." ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eciEN3ZH 📷: Ankit Kumar

🌍 It's increasingly important that as climate change affects our water availability, we need to monitor and manage water resources to ensure supply to individuals, companies, and protect wildlife. 🌊 The Environment Agency (EA) plays an important role in managing water resources, including the abstraction of water, with abstractors needing to comply with conditions to reduce or stop abstraction. 💻 Join our upcoming webinar to hear more about how the Environment Agency is using a new digital service and its hydrometric network to manage England's water resources. 🗓️ Wednesday, 6 November ⏰ 12.00pm -1.00pm Sign up here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eNZqs8Fy #WaterAbstraction #EnvironmentAgency
