Cheers! This bottle of The Excelsior Composition Essence was marketed in the early 20th century as a ‘substitute for alcoholic beverages’. It’s a herbal cordial beverage described as being good for the heart and mood, for digestion and expelling wind, for the nerves and stomach, to counteract stale food in the summer, and for the bowels. The product was manufactured by The Walpole Botanic Dispensary in Southampton, which sold a range of herbal medicinal products, as well as food and cosmetics. In 1935 C.W. Aloysius Brown wrote the book ‘Get Back to Nature and Live. The Walpole Botanic Guide to Health’ to promote the dispensary. #RPSMuseum #MuseumMonday
