Last week our Chief Executive Chris Sherwood was featured on the Third Sector Podcast talking about his experience leading and transforming the RSPCA. He talks about some of the highs and lows over the past six years, the challenges in creating a better world for every animal, the importance of collaboration and the voluntary sector under Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour government. We have been improving the welfare of farmed animals for 200 years. RSPCA Assured is a critical part of this work. It exists because no one else is doing this work. There is an appalling lack of legal protection for farmed animals and we are the only organisation setting and regularly monitoring farmed animal welfare, while continuously driving up standards. Our scheme has recently come under scrutiny so we commissioned an independent review of 200 farms, and we are reassured that it has concluded that RSPCA Assured is operating effectively to assure farmed animal welfare. This gives us, our partners and the public further confidence that RSPCA Assured is making a positive difference to animals on farms right now. This week we've given evidence in a judicial review arguing that fast-growing chickens, often known as 'frankenchickens', are unlawful. 90% of chickens in the UK live lives of suffering, genetically bred to grow so fast they can barely stand, develop lesions on their legs, suffer from heart defects and can even experience sudden death. We're proud to have supported The Humane League UK with this landmark appeal which has the potential to make the single largest impact for animals in 200 years. Their managing director said: "The RSPCA’s robust scientific evidence, and talented legal support, have been crucial to this case. We would never have made it this far and generated this much publicity if the RSPCA weren’t in our corner. Thank you!" We now have an anxious 12 weeks to hear the result and are keeping everything crossed for good news to stop the suffering of over 1 billion chickens a year 🤞 📷 A chicken bred for meat at just 34 days old. The weight gain of such breeds is the equivalent of a three-year-old human child weighing 28-stone.

We welcome the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs announcement that single-use vapes will be banned by June 2025! Five million disposable vapes are thrown away every single week, so this move represents a major milestone in protecting wildlife and the environment from the dangers of disposables 🚭 Find out more: https://bit.ly/3PdfBL4

RSPCA reposted this
Today, we at the RSPCA head into court to stand alongside our colleagues at The Humane League UK to challenge the Government over the legality of fast-growing chickens. The scale of the suffering involved with chickens reared for their meat is huge - nearly a billion chickens every single year live short brutal lives, bred to grow so fast that they struggle to stand, develop lesions, suffer heart failure and even sudden death. This is why this landmark case has the potential to make the single most important change for animals in 200 years. We’re proud to be standing up for animals and we hope to drive forward this seismic change for animal welfare. https://lnkd.in/e3-sUef3

Our friends at World Federation for Animals are advocating for animal welfare at #COP16Colombia this week, where we hope to see the governments address topics including sustainable wildlife management, humane approaches to invasive alien species, policies that protect our ecosystems, and more👏 In order to create a sustainable future for every kind, we need to align animal welfare with environmental health, and human well-being - check out their #Animals4BioDiversity recommendations in detail: https://lnkd.in/et8Aex9q

We're one step closer to pet owners in Wales having rights to keep a pet in rented accommodation 🤞 Many people have to make the difficult choice between a roof over their heads and keeping their beloved pets, which can cause real heartache, welfare issues and also add strain to rescues. We hope the Welsh Government will listen to our calls and those of the Senedd's Local Government and Housing Committee.
