Rural Community Network

Civic and Social Organizations

We are a voluntary membership organisation supporting rural communities and groups across Northern Ireland.

About us

Rural Community Network is a regional voluntary organisation established by community groups from rural areas in 1991 to articulate the voice of rural communities on issues relating to poverty, disadvantage and equality. It is a membership organisation and is managed by a voluntary Board of Directors, elected every two years. Two community representatives from each of the six counties make up the main component of the Networks Board with statutory, voluntary, farming, environmental, cross border and other sectoral groups making up the rest.

  • Upstander and Bystander training focuses on empowering individuals to move from being passive observers of negative situations to actively taking steps to intervene or support those affected. This training aims to cultivate a culture of responsibility and action in the face of bullying, harassment, discrimination, or other forms of harm. Bystanding involves witnessing a situation without taking action, often leading to inaction that can perpetuate harm, while Upstanding involves recognising the need for intervention and actively taking steps to address or prevent harm, promoting safety and justice. • Last night, we had an evening with the team at Glasgowbury, in the heart of Draperstown. We learnt about the amazing platform they have created for rural people on their podcast ‘Voices from the Sperrins’. Their journey from beginning as a festival to transforming an old cornstore into a thriving hub for music, creativity, heritage, learning and grassroots community activity was inspiring. In the heart of rural communities, hubs like this are key in creating space to learn, make mistakes, be creative, challenge yourself and to keep local heritage alive. We heard of the impact the podcasts are having on local people and on the diaspera of Draperstown and Ballinascreen world-wide. The podcasts within this hub are the archives of the future, where stories of folklore, sport, agriculture and traditions are being recorded for generations to come. We would like to thank Paddy, Stella and Nathan at Glasgowbury for their warm welcome last night. The National Lottery Heritage Fund
