We are incredibly proud of our talented team members, Simon Wood and Paul Field, for their insightful presentation at the Royal Aeronautical Society Flight Simulation Conference on tools for pilot training. Their deep insights into learning and the effective use of technology greatly enhances our customer experience. A special thank you to Chris Hunter for the generous invitation. Moving forward, our challenge is to transition from an engineering-centric approach to one that streamlines the instructor’s role, sustaining a learning environment that offers meaningful exposure to relevant threats, aligned with training needs.

When Virgin Australia decided to introduce Evidence-based Training to enhance the recurrent training of its 1,250 pilots, it recognised the importance of bringing in the outside expertise of Salient. As the company’s Brian Williams says: “We recognised that the move to EBT was not just a change for the trainees and instructors, but also change for the policy makers, the development teams building the program, the management and safety team measuring performance, and the executive team ultimately accountable for the safety of our airline operation.” Read how it’s going, and the pilots’ reaction to what they see as a ‘safe’ learning environment.

We have to counter the inappropriate use of TEM in training. LOSA is a great and successful concept and provides unique insights to operators who engage in the process. LOSA is about observers capturing the stories of flights they undertake. TEM is a useful framework to help our understanding of the stories. In training we can use the data very effectively in design, but the purpose of #ebt is to stretch individuals and for crews to manage complexity. Simple as that!
Threat and Error Management is a great concept for Line Operations Safety Audits; the challenge is how it can be better used in training. Threats and Errors are built into the Evidence-based Training programme, but just counting them is counter-productive. Many Undesired Aircraft States do not necessarily translate into any serious safety risk and what we should really be interested in is how crews manage them.
How can Threat and Error Management (TEM) support learning?
