19 Startups and Scaleups turning Waste to Chemicals 🧪 What: Us humans make a whole lot of waste. So much, in fact, that we’re running out of places to put it. Despite the exciting discovery of plastic-eating worms… existing solutions aren’t even close to sufficient to take care of our problems.  What if instead we could put our waste streams to good use? 💡 Why: Of all the sectors, the chemical sector eats up the most energy – it uses up more than 10% of fossil fuels produced globally. And it’s the third largest industry subsector in terms of direct CO2 emissions (about half is used as feedstock for products). 🌈 Opportunity: - Waste prevention by creating a waste stream that doubles as a valuable feedstock - Enabling a circular economy to not only help us to reduce the amount of harmful waste that enters our ecosystems, but also facilitate a truly circular material lifecycle. ⚠️ Challenges: - Those using above-ground carbon sources rather than fossil fuels as feedstock will need to take care that they don’t contribute to the destruction of wildlife habitats, deforestation, or irresponsible water use. . - They will need to be cost-competitive with well-established ones. - Does high demand = high price? The more demand there is for waste streams, the more likely these waste streams will gain a higher price tag.
