Secretary of State Peter Kyle has appointed Matt Clifford, tech entrepreneur and Chair of Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA) to drive forward the government’s new AI Opportunities Action Plan. The Action Plan will identify how to: ✅ boost take up of AI across the public and private sectors ✅ further grow the UK’s AI industry ✅ develop AI infrastructure and compute to support AI growth The Action Plan forms a key part of the government’s ambitions to create economic growth. AI has huge potential as a source of new growth by improving productivity and bringing opportunities for products and services.

Peter Kyle visits UK Biobank as the government and Amazon Web Services (AWS) deliver a joint £16 million investment to improve data storage that will help researchers deliver medical breakthroughs. The funding will ensure UK Biobank has the cloud infrastructure it needs to securely store and handle its unrivalled wealth of health data, supporting research that is being used to develop new diagnostics, treatments and cures for devastating diseases like Parkinson’s, dementia and cancer. The UK is a world leader in life sciences and across the Greater Manchester area, there are many organisations that are driving the sector forward. Lord Patrick Vallance visited just a few of these- Yourgene Health, QIAGEN, Bruntwood SciTech and C3 Biotech, to see first-hand how their cutting-edge tech can drive innovation and provide economic growth in the UK. The region's commitment to science is one of the reasons DSIT has opened its second headquarter in Salford, Greater Manchester.
