As the 2024 Olympics begin, we’re marking the centenary of sportsman Eric Liddell’s 1924 victory in Paris. Nicknamed the ‘Flying Scotsman’, Liddell originally planned to run the 100 metre race but was unable to compete on a Sunday due to his personal beliefs. Instead, he opted to compete in the 400 metres – winning gold, and setting a new world record in the process. Liddell’s story was later depicted in the Oscar-winning film ‘Chariots of Fire’. This week we celebrated the programme launch for Nordic Music Days 2024, one of the world’s longest running festivals for contemporary classical music. We are delighted that this year it will be taking place in Glasgow from 30 October to 3 November 🇩🇰🇫🇴🇫🇮🇮🇸🇳🇴🇸🇪🏴 This is the first time the festival will be held in Scotland and only the third time the festival has been held outside of the Nordic region since it was established in 1888 by the Council of Nordic Composers (NKR). Nordic Music Days celebrates contemporary classical music and is a key event for composers and creators throughout the region. For this year’s festival NKR has been working in collaboration with the lead partner in Scotland, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and many others from across Scotland and the full breadth of our Nordic neighbours. The theme running through the festival is Word of Mouth and evokes the Scottish and Nordic traditions in spreading knowledge, stories, and ideas. We were also given a first glimpse of the exciting lineup of composers, artists and performances which you can find in the programme on the Nordic Music Days website. We would like to offer a heartfelt thank you to all our guest and speakers with a special mention to the Nordic Embassies in London; the Faroese Representation to the UK; the Finnish Institute; NKR’s Chair, Martin Jonsson Tibblin; RSNO’s Chief Executive Alistair Mackie and Gillian Moore, RSNO Artistic Associate and Member of Nordic Music Days 2024’s curatorial team. Your enthusiasm and support are what makes the festival special. Don’t miss out on the change to experience the festival for yourself in Glasgow this Autumn!
