It was great to welcome founder of One of many Dr Joanna Martin to our London studio for a really engaging talk about the new paradigm of leadership as part of our week-long celebration of International Women’s Day. Joanna had us all thinking about our leadership styles and PowerTypes as she provided insight into the tools and mindset that can help us lead with impact, without sacrificing our wellbeing. A really useful session for both architects and non-architects alike. Similar topics will be explored as part of the upcoming ‘One Woman Conference’ on 10-11 May in London. How can we create resilience across the education estate? Schools and universities need to be continually available for teaching, learning and research. Yet so many estates are affected by flooding and extremes of temperature, resulting in full or partial closure of facilities and sometimes lost periods of teaching and learning. On Thursday 24 April, Director of Practice Helen Taylor will join the ‘Creating Resilience Across the Education Estate’ panel discussion to examine strategies for creating resilience across existing estates, with the aim of enabling continued operation, despite climate events as part of the Education Estates® Exhibition | Conference | Awards Net Zero Conference 2025. • Interesting interview with Vivien Leong, Director and Head of our Singapore Studio, as she shares insight into what inspired her to pursue a career in the built environment and the challenges she has faced as a female professional working in architecture. #InternationalWomensDay #IWD2025 #AccelerateAction

As we continue our celebration of International Women's Day 2025, we honor women who are breaking barriers and inspiring future generations. Vivien Leong, Director at Scott Brownrigg, is a distinguished architect with over 20 years of experience in the UK and Singapore. Recognized as one of Singapore’s 15 Great Engineers and Architects Aged 40 and Under, Vivien leads complex projects across various sectors, driving excellence and innovation. 𝗤: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝘀𝘂𝗲 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗲? I’m Singaporean and have studied architecture in both Singapore and the UK, leading to my registration as an architect in both countries. In 1990s Singapore, university course options were limited, and I chose architecture partly by elimination and partly based on my initial perception of the field. I had imagined it to be primarily about creating beautiful drawings. However, over time, I came to appreciate its multi-dimensional nature, deepening my passion for the profession. Every project brings exciting opportunities to collaborate and explore challenges. I enjoy making and fixing things, whether designing from scratch or improving existing structures. An architect should feel responsible for the built environment and be sensitive to what is being done and how it is used. Thoughtful design can greatly improve how people interact with their surroundings, while poorly considered interventions may disrupt or limit their experiences. Perhaps it’s more interesting if I shared a few anecdotes, I don’t consider these as challenges, maybe more as amusing scenarios. :) 1: I was the only female in a room of 20-30 males, including clients, project managers, contractors, and consultants. The meeting was at our office, so we naturally hosted our guests. My then-thoughtful boss offered to pour tea and coffee for everyone so that I wouldn't have to be the ‘tea lady’. 2: I was again in a room full of male engineer clients. I took out my phone which was in a pink case, one of the engineers remarked ‘so girly’. My colleague immediately replied ‘Of course! She’s a girl!’ 3: I had asked a contractor to show me all available colors for a fire door release button. The contractor called his supplier and said he needed to find out about other color options because ‘the architect is female’. I found this quite funny, as if male architects wouldn't ask about color options. -- 𝘑𝘰𝘪𝘯 𝘶𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘬 𝘢𝘴 𝘸𝘦 𝘤𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘵 𝘦𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥. The winners of the 2024 RIBA Scott Brownrigg Award for Sustainable Development have been announced. This year's winning project – ‘Unlocking Indigenous Stone Construction in the UK: A Guide for Sustainable Sourcing’ was submitted by Architect and Lecturer Giulliana Giorgi, Senior Structural Engineer Jennifer Haines, and Marketing and Media Manager Matt Robb. The proposed research seeks to investigate the current barriers to increasing the use of indigenous stone in construction. It explores its potential as one of the key solutions for decarbonising the built environment while fostering local economic growth. Congratulations to the winning team. We look forward to receiving their findings and understanding more about the positive impact this could have on the UK construction sector.
