About us
This year, the Scottish Parliament turns 25. We’ve worked over that time to hold the Scottish Government to account, represent constituents and pass meaningful legislation. Parliament is made up of 129 elected representatives, known as Members of the Scottish Parliament or MSPs. We can pass laws affecting Scotland on a wide range of domestic issues, known as devolved matters.

Supporting people with learning disabilities, and neurodiverse people, into employment is crucial if the Scottish Government is to maintain progress in reducing the disability employment gap. That’s the message from Holyrood’s Economy and Fair Work Committee, in a report published today following an inquiry. The Committee has found that The Scottish Government needs to use the inquiry’s insight to deliver a clear and measurable action plan for government, local authorities, businesses, and employability services to work together to help all disabled young people prepare for work, find work and stay in employment. The Committee also asks that the Scottish Government provides an update on progress around its fair work resource for employers. Convener Claire Baker explains more in this video, and you can find out further information about the inquiry and read the Committee's report 'Closing the Disability Employment Gap in Scotland' at https://ow.ly/7z7H50TJGBN

This week we were pleased to welcome 20 women to the Scottish Parliament to learn more about providing evidence to committees or appearing as a witness, and increase their confidence to take part. A wide range of views helps us to undertake our inquiries and make our recommendations. Our Economy and Fair Work Committee has been working with IoD Scotland and Women's Enterprise Scotland to encourage more women to come forward and have their voices heard within the Scottish Parliament. During the one-day event, attendees learned about how committees work. They met Convener Claire Baker, Deputy Convener Michelle Thomson and Member Lorna Slater to discuss how evidence helps the committee to be better informed about policy issues and to scrutinise government. A mock committee meeting helped attendees experience how it feels to give evidence on the record and increase their confidence. It ended with a visit from the Presiding Officer, who emphasised the importance of women contributing their views to public life in the parliament and beyond. "I absolutely understand that deep frustration and anger that is out there". This week, Shirley-Anne Somerville, Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, gave evidence on the delay to the Human Rights (Scotland) Bill. The Equalities Committee asked her about the views that they had heard from organisations on this decision. Watch the meeting in full: https://ow.ly/WXiJ50THVH1

Animal Equality UK had accused the Dunstaffnage fish farm of removing ‘tonnes’ of dead fish hours before a recent MSP visit. The Fish Health Inspectorate has since said that it does ‘not have concerns with the routine mortality removal procedure being undertaken in the video footage'. This week, at the Rural Affairs Committee, Dr Ralph Bickerdike from Scottish Sea Farms spoke about the media coverage.
