The $22.8 billion deal by Blackrock and MSC to buy Hutchison Ports international terminals underscores a shift by top container lines to vertical integration of ports into their businesses. The two Panama Canal ports of Balboa and Cristobal may have grabbed the headlines in recent days with their likely sale by CK Hutchison to Blackrock, Global Infrastructure Partners and MSC’s Swiss-based Terminal Investment Ltd, but consolidation and vertical integration is evident among global terminal operators and liner majors across most continents. Risk is a hugely important topic in the current environment spanning geo-politics, regulatory change and decarbonisation, sanctions, cyber-security, and reputational risk in the event of an incident or casualty. An excellent panel will give views from across the spectrum with leading executives from top ship managers, classification and crisis communications. Bulker contracting continued its 2024 decline over the first two months of this year, dropping 92% year on year to its lowest level in at least 30 years, according to Bimco. Only a few contracts for new bulk carriers were placed in January but not a single order was booked in February, according to Bimco Shipping Analysis Manager, Filipe Gouveia. The shipowners’ organisation cited weak freight rates, high prices for new ships, long lead times, and widespread uncertainties as some of the main negatives. The orderbook for methanol powered vessels has increased significantly in recent years becoming a serious part of the alternative fuels mix, although availability of green methanol remains a concern. Speaking to Greg Dolan, CEO of the Methanol Institute (MI) in Singapore recently he said that there were now around 50 methanol dual-fuel vessels on the water, with a further 350 methanol capable newbuilding's in the orderbook – that is to say they could run on methanol from day one. In addition, there a further 700 methanol ready vessels.
