It’s a pleasure to be in Valencia for VDS—a city quickly making its mark on the European tech startup scene. Yesterday, I toured the newly renovated Marina Tech Ecosystem with Startup Valencia. It’s impressive to see a full end-to-end ecosystem taking shape around EDEM Escuela de Empresarios, Lanzadera and Angels, and with scale-ups like Sesame HR thriving (with one of the coolest office spaces I’ve seen in a while!) Today the conference kicked off with some insightful talks on GenAI, featuring Tom Mason from Unlikely AI and Amr Awadallah from Vectara. Excited to join tomorrow’s panel at 10:35 on the Main Stage, where I’ll be discussing Deploying Scalable AI for Tangible Business Impact alongside moderator Anna Heim, Yannis Daubin, and Jaime De Mora. #VDS2024 #VDS

"Building trust in AI needs an end-to-end approach. This is were MLOps provides the operational framework to consistently manage and monitor Al systems, improving transparency, accountability, and trust in Al deployment over time." Seldon's very own Kanta Vekaria, PhD, made a lasting impact as a speaker on an inspiring panel alongside powerhouse names like Julie Hood (EY EMEIA AI Enablement Leader), Susan Standiford (former CTO of IKEA and tech advisor), and Veronica Costa Orvalho (CEO of Didimo). They discussed an ongoing and important conversation around how to ethically source data for the next generation of AI models and the principles we must consider to build more inclusive technology. The 2024 Grace Hopper Celebration in Philadelphia brought together 30,000 brilliant female and nonbinary technologists, and we couldn’t be prouder of Kanta for driving conversations that shape the future of ethical AI. #GraceHopper2024 #WomenInTech #MLOps #AI #EthicalAI #DiversityInTech

Our CPTO Alex Housley took part in the OpenUKs discussion on AI Openness in UK parliament
It was a pleasure to participate in the OpenUK roundtable discussion at the House of Lords yesterday on AI Openness. A big thank you to Amanda Brock for organizing the event and to Nat Wei for hosting and initiating the discussion. The discussion brought together influential voices across government, policy and industry, including MP Chi Onwurah, Baroness Stowell, Elizabeth Seger (AI policy and risk expert, Demos), a product leader from Mozilla, and AI startup founders and engineers Ed Shee (co-founder of Ignitus and Seldon alum) and Matt Carey (StackOne). Key Takeaways: - Adopting Open Source in Government: There's a push towards more open-source adoption in Parliament. A fully closed approach could mean missed opportunities, particularly in AI. - EU AI Act and Innovation: Some elements of the EU AI Act are seen as stifling innovation (see recent comments by Mario Draghi, former Prime Minister of Italy). This presents an opportunity for the UK to develop a different regulatory framework, though EU compliance will still be necessary for market access. - Retaining AI Talent in the UK: Despite the UK having world-class AI education and research, talent is leaking into the US market. The UK could capitalize on this by promoting open-source contributions as a pathway for engineers and data scientists to build stronger CVs and gain valuable experience. - Reframing Open Source for AI: Traditional open-source definitions do not align well with AI models. While model weights might be open, they are often uninterpretable, especially for LLMs. Moreover, new forms of licensing, such as source-available licenses, are emerging to ensure compliance with regulatory and ethical standards. - Challenges in Data Sharing: While there are some open datasets, not all data used to train models by companies like OpenAI, Meta, and Mistral can be openly shared. There are also grey areas regarding the rights to data scraped from the web. - Sovereign Compute Cloud for the UK: Only a few companies have the capability to develop large-scale models due to access to GPUs. There is a case for establishing a sovereign compute cloud in the UK. - Regulating AI: On the issue of risk, the analogy was made that while hammers are not regulated, guns are. So, is AI a gun or a hammer? At what point does an AI model transition from being a tool to a weapon? The focus should be on optimizing AI for good, not just managing risks. It was an enlightening discussion that highlighted both the opportunities and challenges in shaping the future of AI. Looking forward to continued dialogue and collaboration on these critical issues!
