Employees at Sellafield have facilitated the Young Generation Network (YGN) four-day Introduction to 'Waste Management and Decommissioning' event, attracting young professionals in the nuclear sector from across the UK. Attendees enjoyed insightful tours of the Sellafield site and the Low-Level-Waste Repository in Cumbria, accompanied by talks from experts within the nuclear sector. Among the speakers was Alyson Armett from Sellafield Ltd, who presented on retrieval processes at the Sellafield site, alongside Louise Hetherington, operations manager at RAICo, who discussed the promising future of robotics in the nuclear industry. Additionally, Jonathan Clingan provided a thorough overview of high-level waste management plants. Our investment in The West Cumbria Mental Health Partnership via our Social Impact, Multiplied programme is making a real difference to our community. Since our initial investment of £1.8 million in 2022, the partnership which is delivered by Cumbria Community Foundation has: 🟢 provided funding to more than 20 charitable organisations to provide accessible, community-based mental health support services 🟢 provided support to more than 5,000 adults and 2,000 young children and young people 🟢of those supported in the first three years, 61% reported improved mental health or wellbeing, 58% reported increased self-esteem and confidence, and 58% saw a reduction in stress and anxiety Founder of the social enterprise Mental Health North West, Kelvyn James, secured £31,320 of funding via the partnership. This has enabled him to deliver 120 free guided walks (pictured) over 3 years for people experiencing mental health issues. Confirming that our financial support to the West Cumbria Mental Health Partnership will continue in this financial year, our head of corporate sustainability and supply chain development, Eirini Etoimou, said: "Continuing to empower the West Cumbria Mental Health Partnership is a testament to our commitment to fostering resilience and well-being in our communities." Congratulations to Natalie, who's been shortlisted for the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s 'Young Woman Engineer of the Year' Awards 2024. 👏 The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) highlight some of the exceptional talent and role models in the engineering sector such as Natalie who's passionate about encouraging young people, especially girls, to consider careers in engineering. With only 16% of engineering professionals being female, addressing this gender imbalance is a high priority for the IET. Natalie said: "I'm honoured to even be considered as a finalist. The passion and enjoyment I get from promoting a career in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) to the future generation and helping to break down barriers as a woman gives me constant motivation." This #ThrowbackThursday we’ve got a couple of photos of the scale models that we used to have dotted across the Sellafield site. These models would have been created by the design office to visualise a new build. Nowadays, our architects and design engineers do everything digitally using computer-aided design in the creation, modification, analysis and optimisation of plant designs. Over the summer we invited children of our employees, contractors, and wider community to help us create safety road signs for the Sellafield site. Inspired by the theme ‘Sam the Snail’, 238 young people submitted drawings designed to encourage people working on the nuclear site to drive safely so that they could return home to loved ones, injury free. Our chief executive, Euan Hutton, full time safety representative, Neil Edmondson, Elizabeth Wordsworth from next gen executive, James Lewis from Programme and Project Partners, and Suzanne Pender from our employee-led Family Network, had the difficult task of choosing the winners. They chose an outright winner in each of the 2 age categories. The judges also created a shortlist of 20 snails from which employees voted for their winner. We are excited to announce that the winners are: 🏆 0-6 age category - Remi, 6-year-old 🏆 7-12 age category - Emily, 9-year-old 🏆 People’s choice award - Ivy, 6-year-old Their designs will now be turned into road signs on the Sellafield site, and traffic stickers at Hinton House in Warrington.
