Our Take on the Labour Budget: Key Insights for Business Owners 💡
Our Managing Director, Steve Timmis Accountant for Entrepreneurs, and Head of Tax, Peter Rossiter Rossiter, were joined by Mark Finucane of Sempar Commercial Finance and David Winchurch of Win Financial Ltd to watch the first Labour budget in 14 years. Given the extensive pre-budget discussion around tax increases, particularly targeting those classified by Labour as "non-working" expectations were low for a business-friendly outcome, and the budget largely met those expectations.
The general consensus, however, was that it could have been more severe, and there are still valuable planning opportunities available. Here are our top takeaways:
1️⃣ Employer National Insurance Changes: Small and medium-sized business owners will see an increase in employers' national insurance, alongside a reduction of over £4,000 in the threshold before employers pay national insurance. However, the employment allowance will rise by more than £5,000, which may help offset some of these additional costs.
2️⃣ Capital Gains Tax (CGT): The CGT rate on property remains unchanged, but from 30th October 2024, all other capital gains will align with property tax rates.
3️⃣ Business Asset Disposal Relief: The relief will continue, though rates are set to rise from 10% to 14% in April 2025 and to 18% from April 2026.
4️⃣ Pensions and Inheritance Tax: From April 2027, pensions will be included within estates for inheritance tax purposes, a significant shift in tax planning for retirement funds.
5️⃣ Stamp Duty Land Tax: Effective tomorrow, Stamp Duty on second properties will increase from 3% to 5%.
