💻 Technology is advancing rapidly, and our ability to scrutinise – judging the safety and efficacy of new systems – needs to keep pace. From the moment that AI tools are developed, to when they are implemented into public life, there are key ‘handover’ points in which information risks being lost – especially when handover occurs between people with different levels of experience or expertise (i.e., from developers to clinicians). The new Responsible Handover framework empowers people to understand the origins, capability and limitations of new tech, so that it can be applied safely and effectively, solidifying the flow of information from developers to end users, and ensuring that AI is used as intended. See below for more information 👇
About us
Founded in 2002, Sense about Science is an independent charity promoting the public interest in sound science and evidence. We advocate for openness and honesty about research, working with decision-makers, researchers and community groups to raise the standard of evidence in public life. Our focus is on socially or scientifically difficult issues where evidence is neglected, conflicting or misunderstood.

⚠ Governance of AI and new data-based tools is lagging dangerously behind their spread through hospitals, governments, banks, transport hubs and other major infrastructure. 💡 That’s why we developed the concept of Responsible Handover of AI. Responsible Handover is about empowering everyone involved in AI and data science tools, all the way from code development to its use in the real world, to ask good questions before taking a tool forward. It’s about avoiding unintended consequences, while not missing opportunities for progress. To find out why Responsible Handover is important in AI, and what we are doing about it, join our interactive webinar on 𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝟭𝟱 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝘁 𝟭𝟮.𝟯𝟬𝗽𝗺. Sign to the free webinar via the link below 👇 👇

👨💻 Governance of AI and advanced software apps is lagging dangerously behind their spread through hospitals, governments, banks, transport hubs and other major infrastructure ⚠ Unlike with drugs and medical devices, there are currently no rules for the safe development and roll out of new data based tools, despite equivalent risks of harm. 👉 The Responsible Handover framework sets out the information that should be shared alongside software models, applications, and the questions that organisations should ask before picking them up and using them. Sense about Science will be running a FREE, interactive 'Standing Up for Science' workshop for Early Career Researchers on Friday 1st November from 10am-4pm at the University of Edinburgh. This unique training will equip ECRs to make their voices heard in public debates about science. Meet scientists who have engaged with the media, learn from respected science journalists, hear from policymakers on how to inform policy, and receive support on how to talk about complex science topics. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Apply for a place before October 21: https://lnkd.in/g753w_5y

How do we build community resilience through risk know=how? Leonor Sierra from the Risk Know-How team introduced why risk know-how can empower communities and the risk know-how framework at the International Conference on Resilient Systems 2024 in Singapore, in a joint session with our collaborators from LRF Institute for the Public Understanding of Risk, Olivia Jensen and Leonard Lee. Leonard introduced the initiative and offered a perspective on the risk perception gap and why it matters. Leonor highlighted Risk know-how practitioners and their needs, sharing some case studies, as well as emphasising the need to consider how we assess whether a community has Risk know-how. Leonor finished by stressing the need for information providers to consider whether it is a lack of information and understanding that pose challenges for communities to adopt safer practices, or whether it’s actually other barriers or a different balance of trade-offs that result in this lack of adoption. The session ended with Olivia leading an interactive exercise where the attendees were asked to weigh up information and consider the trade-offs in a flood risk scenario: would they share information with a high degree of #uncertainty? At what stage would they start an evacuation? The participants strongly agreed on the importance of sharing the uncertainty, not just avoiding it - like we discuss in the #RiskKnowHowFramework: https://lnkd.in/dNgB-gSs. The discussion about the importance of #practitioners also echoed the keynote from the previous day by Professor Cynthia Chen, and the role "captains" play in getting aid to communities. 🚂 The Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom's Passenger Railway is due to pass through the House of Commons today. ❌ Though it aims to “to improve the quality, efficiency and affordability of passenger rail transport”, the bill has failed our #EvidenceTransparency test. Responding to the findings, Tracey Brown said: "While this bill has been prepared at speed, there is no good reason for supporting documents to omit the sources and calculations behind figures" We will continue rating major policy announcements until all departments consistently show their workings. All my working life I seem to have attended lectures that make me think ‘crikey, I’m glad I came to this.’ Today with Zhai Panmao, cochair IPCC AR6 WG1, in Beijing. We discussed what an average hides in 1.5 degrees of warming. It flattens out dramatic changes in some parts of land and ocean that are already with us.
