To mark the start of #BlackHistoryMonth, last week Serco colleagues had the privilege of hearing from Stuart Lawrence, distinguished civil rights campaigner and brother of Stephen Lawrence who was killed in Eltham, South-east London, on 22 April 1993. Stuart spoke movingly about the childhood trauma of living through the loss of his brother, the impact this had on his parents, the anguish caused to his family that followed, and ultimately, the learnings he has taken from the experience and the new direction he has found in life. As the theme of Black History Month this year is ‘Reclaiming Narratives,’ Stuart reminded us that as individual storytellers, “We all have the ability to change the narrative on racial tolerance and diversity, provided we have the courage to challenge and call out racism and bigotry, whenever we see it.” He talked about how it was necessary sometimes for us to “step into the uncomfortableness, to become a better person, do good work and contribute to society.” The evening was a moving tribute to Stephen Lawrence and a fitting way to mark Black History Month. Thanks to all those colleagues who attended from #Serco, #Glaxosmithkline, #GSK, #Linklaters, #AlixPartners, #Moodys and #SPGlobal. #BlackHistoryMonth #BHM2024 #ReclaimingNarratives #ImpactABetterFuture #HonDrStuartLawrence GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare, L.P., Linklaters, AlixPartners, Moody's, S&P Global, Black History Month, Hon Dr Stuart Lawrence, Jemima Broadbridge, Niharika Khanna, Tasneem Said, Heather Key [she/her], Tansy Cox BA (Hons), Harvinder Channa, Tunde Gbajumo, Erica Nyoni

A lack of real-world operational experience means ‘expert’ advice to government is often theoretical. PowerPoints and diagrams just won’t cut it anymore – governments need a new kind of advisor. Read our article in the New Statesman on why it’s time for a new type of advisory firm: one that combines operational experience with the highest-quality advice to present practical, sustainable solutions to governments wanting better public services. https://lnkd.in/edk5xgKu

This #NationalInclusionWeek, meet Alesha - a single mum with two children, who found security and fulfilment as a Serco Prison Officer. And it turns out, her attention to detail, communication skills, and patience were just what we needed. Alesha’s diverse experiences equipped her to excel. Over the years, Alesha’s dedicated work and the on-going support of her colleagues propelled her from Prison Officer to a role in the prison’s Induction Team, teaching new arrivals the rules and regulations. After 20 years of working in prisons, on and off, Alesha still loves what she does and would recommend anyone, from any walk of life, to do it. Alesha told us: 🎙️ “I still get that feeling of achievement when you know you’ve gained the trust and respect of prisoners. I love the teamwork, the jokes, the colleagues. The friendships you build here are strong, because trust is important and needed in this job." Alesha’s story is a testament to the power of diversity and inclusion, showing how bringing together different backgrounds and experiences can lead to success. In fostering an environment where transferable skills are celebrated and where everyone is supported to grow, we’re creating a diverse environment where our people can thrive. #NationalInclusionWeek #DiversityandInclusion #ImpactMatters

🔦 🚢 Spotlight on Serco UK Marine Services – behind the scenes at an oil spill response exercise. Serco Marine Devonport is a Tier 1 and Tier 2 oil spill response organisation that is available 24/7 to respond to any incidents that may occur. The team has a wide range of assets, including different types of vessels and specialised equipment, which help protect the environment, marine life, sensitive areas, and ecosystems while ensuring that the King’s Harbour Master (KHM) waters remain operational. 💬 Neil Deane, Deputy Marine Superintendent explains more, “If an oil spill incident occurs, as on scene commander, my number one priority will always be containment, to prevent the incident escalating which would result in a much higher impact on the environment. “To maintain this capability, Serco must pass a rigorous accreditation process every 3 years as laid down in the UK National Standard for Marine Oil Spill Response Providers. This is by way of assessment conducted by an International Spill Accreditation Scheme (ISAS) assessor who acts on behalf of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). “As part of this assessment, and a requirement of the KHM Oil Spill Contingency Plan, the team and I have to demonstrate we have the procedures, assets and infrastructure in place to deliver a 24/7 emergency response service. This demonstration must include access to various items of equipment, logistics and trained personnel to deliver the service as described in a capability statement. “To ensure the high readiness of the response team, I hold several training workshops throughout the year to maintain a level of understanding and proficiency of all the equipment and retain the high standards and quick response times we have demonstrated on numerous occasions. "Tabletop and practical exercises are also a requirement, with at least one Tier 2 response exercise per year. This year was exercise SerCat - held on August 13th, 2024.” 📽 Watch the video to see exercise SerCat in action. #SercoUK #MarineServices #OilPollution #Environment #ImpactABetterFuture #SercoDefenceUK Rachel Wing Marni Ponniah
