Providing specialist care and emotional support for families living with an incurable illness since 1989.

About us

We have been providing specialist care and emotional support to families living with incurable illness in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and Mid Wales since 1989. At the end of 2019, our care for people living with incurable illness was declared as ‘outstanding’ - the highest level of award possible - by the Care Quality Commission for performing ‘exceptionally well’. The CQC, which regulates all health and social care providers, sent examiners to talk to our patients and staff, and review records for services across Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and Mid Wales. Following two separate, intensive inspections, services in Bicton were rated as ‘good’, with Apley assessed as ‘outstanding’ for being caring, responsive and well-led with a ‘strong culture of teamwork and support’ providing care for patients and families that minimises distress and promotes dignity. Our management was observed as motivating staff to deliver ‘excellent and sustainable care’ with ‘a common goal to improve the quality and safety’ of it. Flexible services focussed on ‘individual needs and preferences’, with inspectors praising staff for treating patients and those close to them with ‘compassion and kindness’ and going ‘above and beyond’ to provide support. With four out of five patients looked after at home, we also support people through a variety of bespoke services in the community, as well as ward care. We have day services providing coffee mornings, consultant led clinics, educational programmes, and complementary and creative therapy including aromatherapy sessions, art and craft sessions, massage and reiki. Community outreach teams work with GPs, district nurses and care homes to provide care, and hospice at home and inpatient services deliver care for palliative patients. The hospice also runs a Compassionate Communities befriending service, bereavement support and a lymphoedema service.

As a centre for excellence of palliative care, we are proud to help train and support our specialists of the future. Katie is a trainee clinical psychologist at Staffordshire University and is currently on placement with us. She specialises in the wellbeing of those living with a primary malignant brain tumour diagnosis and while with us is conducting some important research that will help future support and care.

Here at Severn Hospice, we are at the forefront of specialist palliative care and Becky, our Director of Care, has been on transatlantic calls sharing best practice with a hospice in Canada. They were keen to find out all about our virtual hospice, which is a brand-new innovation that enables us to provide enhanced, consultant-led, complex care to people at home. They had never heard of this approach anywhere else and were impressed to learn that last year our virtual hospice helped almost 200 people who would have otherwise required hospital or hospice admission to be cared for in their own homes.

Even though Christmas is still 16 weeks away, this fabulous bunch from Capgemini have been getting into the festive spirit!🎅 They joined us at our Superstore in Shrewsbury for their corporate volunteering day and helped bundle up hundreds if not thousands of Christmas cards into bumper packs. You can see their handywork as these lovely cards are now winging their way to all our shops. Thank you Capgemini – it’s because you care that we can.

Every year, we’re proud to mentor new trainee doctors at our hospice. This year’s group has just arrived, and we’re thrilled to welcome them to our team! During their time here, they’ll learn vital skills in pain and symptom control, as well as communication—key components of specialist palliative care. While they help us deliver the compassionate care our patients need, we provide them with invaluable experience that they’ll carry forward into their careers. Under the supervision of our consultants and senior doctors, and with the support of our entire healthcare team, they’re gaining firsthand experience of what exceptional palliative care looks like. We look forward to seeing them grow and make a difference in the lives of our patients!

The team CEL Group hit the bullseye for us when they took on a 12-hour darts marathon🎯 And that’s not all, they also drummed up more support from clients, suppliers, family and friends with their not so silent charity online auction. They raised a fantastic £1,427.56 that will help us care for local families when it matters most. Thank you to everyone at CEL - what a fabulous fundraiser! It’s because you care that we can. 💛

It’s the special touches that help us create our warm and friendly home-from-home environment for patients and their loved ones. And we’ve now got lots of lovely new essential oil diffusers thanks to David from Argos, Telford, who donated £150 of vouchers for us to spend in his store. He popped in to deliver them and they are now on our wards and in our day service rooms. What a wonderful gift – thank you.
