Congratulations to SFP's Aiden Xuezi Zhang on being invited to take part in the Royal Town Planning Institute's Chief Planners of Tomorrow program; a work-shadowing scheme offering young planners the chance to step into the shoes of a chief planning officer for the day. Huge thanks to Sarah Scannell MRTPI and the planning team at Birmingham City Council for hosting Aiden, who's written about his experience, below.
Planning Consultant @ SF Planning Limited | Royal Town Planning Institute, Planning Institute of Australia, Macquarie University, Global Leadership Program
Yesterday I stepped into the shoes of Birmingham's planning team @ Birmingham City Council as part of the Royal Town Planning Institute Chief Planners of Tomorrow initiative. From private consultancy to the heart of local government planning - what a day! The day began with a deep dive into the Druids Heath regeneration project. Witnessing the planning behind transforming a deprived area into a thriving community of 3000 homes was eye-opening. It showed how planning can transform entire communities, balancing ambitious development with social responsibility. A quick tour of Birmingham city centre showcased the delicate balance between preserving heritage and driving growth. From the innovative developments in Digbeth to the challenges faced in East Birmingham, I saw first-hand how planners navigate complex urban landscapes to create cohesive, liveable cities. The afternoon's focus on the Tyseley and Hay Mills Liveable Neighbourhoods Pilot was particularly inspiring. This initiative, aiming to create walkable, sustainable communities, demonstrates how innovative planning can directly improve residents' quality of life. It's a powerful reminder of why many of us entered this profession – to make a tangible, positive impact on people's lives. What struck me most was the passion and resilience of the BCC team. Despite resource constraints and complex challenges, their commitment to shaping Birmingham's future is unwavering in every discussion and decision. A heartfelt thank you to Sarah Scannell MRTPI, Joanne McCallion, Andrew Lindop (CIHCM), Peter Barton, and the entire BCC team for their transparency and insights. Your dedication is truly shaping the future of urban living, and it's an inspiration to planners everywhere.

After more than seven years with team SFP, today Nathan Maddox (MRTPI) leaves us for the next phase of his career, and a fantastic new opportunity. Nathan's impressive legacy of successful applications while working here can be seen in projects across the south-west and beyond. We'll miss his unfailing dedication to his work, his incredibly impressive planning knowledge, and his company in the office, but we are so excited to follow his work in his new role. Sending you off with nothing but our best wishes and lots of luck, Nathan.

◾ SF Planning Core Value: Act with integrity and candour ◾ “…We always try to make something possible and if we don’t think something will work, we say so straight away.” So, we’re saying it. The social media platform ‘X’ (or Twitter if you never got used to the rebrand) just doesn’t work for us any longer. There are a variety of reasons for this, which we’re happy to chat about, but the result is the same. If you follow SF Planning on Twitter, we’ve deactivated our account, which will be permanently deleted following X’s mandatory 30-day period of deactivation. We're grateful to each and every follower, across all our platforms. If you followed and engaged with us on X, thank you. We hope you’ll continue to do this on our other channels, where nothing is changing. You can read our core values in full on the home page of our website: https://lnkd.in/eBhJ_cWz #values #socialmedia

🎉 Planning Permission Approved! – 4 New apartments for Cheltenham brownfield site This development in Caernarvon Court, Cheltenham makes a small, but nonetheless important, contribution towards housing in the town and maximises the development potential of an underutilised and sustainably located brownfield site. Importantly, Caernarvon Court will be resurfaced with the addition of soft landscaping, improving the character and appearance of the area and delivering net biodiversity enhancements. We became involved in this scheme after several previous applications for the site, and it's great to see permission granted so that work can begin. Nice work Nathan Halloran and Simon Firkins MRTPI 🙌 Thanks to coombes:everitt architects Limited, and to the planning officer at Cheltenham Borough Council for a pragmatic approach. #brownfielddevelopment #urbanplanning #newhomes #planningpermission #planningconsultancy Jakub Orna

Thanks for sharing coombes:everitt architects Limited, a great result for the whole project team 🙌 Nice work from Gary Dickens at planning commitee too, where a number of new members were present. The sensitive location meant it was extremely important to explain the benefits of the scheme, which makes full use of the existing concrete structure and access. It's going to be a fascinating project to watch in progress. Full story on the planning strategy for the site to follow soon.
We are delighted to gain planning permission on the site of the former Leckhampton reservoir on Leckhampton Hill on behalf of our client, Taller Development Ltd. 🙌 The application was prepared by SF Planning Limited and approved at planning committee by Cheltenham Borough Council - for a six bedroom contemporary single dwelling with five bathrooms, kitchen/dining and living space, as well as gym, games room, study, wine store, boot room, swimming pool, outdoor seating area and external courtyards. Dubbed a ‘Bond-villain lair” style home, we designed the home to sit below the top surface of the existing buried structure and will be accessed via the existing access to the site from Leckhampton Road. Cheltenham Architects Panel said: “the concept was interesting and exciting overall and liked the boldness of the scheme.” Congratulations to Taller Development Ltd and to SF Planning Limited on the approval - we can’t wait for the design to be brought to life!
