My Experience at the SheCanCode Hackathon.
Yesterday, 24 March 2025, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in an event organized by SheCanCode. A huge thank you to Just IT for making it possible for me to attend such an inspiring and meaningful event.
Thanks to the sponsors of the event: AKQA Leap, Natilik, Refuge, and of course Just IT!
The hackathon brought together five teams, each tasked with solving a challenge centered around a pressing global issue: women's safety in public spaces. Every day, in cities around the world, women face harassment, threats, and violence. Our goal was to create an app that could provide a real solution—or at least help reduce the risks women encounter daily.
Our team developed GoSafe, an app designed to help women return home safely.
The key features included:
📍 Emergency Alerts – A quick button to send a message with the user’s geolocation to a list of trusted contacts or initiate an emergency call.
🗺️ Safe Route Mapping – A real-time map highlighting the safest routes home using a color-coded system (green for safe, yellow for caution, and red for high-risk areas).
📊 Crime Data Analysis – We integrated data on crime hotspots in London to enhance safety recommendations.
This experience was incredibly eye-opening and inspiring. Working with brilliant, talented women, brainstorming creative solutions, and developing an app that could truly make a difference was an experience I’ll never forget.
As a man, I gained a deeper understanding of the real fears women face daily, and it made me even more determined to contribute to change.
I was genuinely impressed by the innovation and creativity of all the other teams. It was amazing to see diverse perspectives and ideas come to life in such a short time.
In the future, I will definitely participate in another hackathon—it would be amazing to keep developing this idea and turn our app into reality.
It was a pleasure working with my amazing teammates Emma Harrison, Holly L., Catriona Bennett, Feruza Kachkinbayeva, Karina S., Lilach Davis, and the mentor Shahzad Subedar ,all for the collaboration and shared passion. Let’s keep building for a safer world!
If you have any solutions or suggestions to help improve women's safety, feel free to leave a comment and contribute to this important mission.
