A major concrete pour at Sheffield Forgemasters’ new 13,000-tonne forging line uses a recycled steel by-product to reduce carbon by 30 per cent. The base for a Top-Hat-Furnace Quench-Tank, involved an excavation of roughly 1,000m3, four metres below ground level, installation of more than 90 tonnes of reinforcement, and pouring of more than 1,000 tonnes of structural concrete. All the concrete for the project incorporates Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS), a recycled by-product from steel production, which acts as a replacement for cement, improving sustainability and saving approximately 30 per cent on carbon emissions. Following confirmation that Sheffield Forgemasters has been granted planning permission to build a landmark 30,000 m2 machining facility on brownfield land in the City’s Meadowhall district, we can share the first images of the site's progress images. Located on Weedon Street, the new facility will form one of the world’s most advanced large machining facilities, to support manufacture for the UK defence programmes. The building will cover a space equal to 12 Olympic-sized swimming pools and will contain some of the largest and most advanced five-axis Vertical Turning Lathes ever produced. Plans for the new #machining facility detail a main building with a circa 272.5 x 110-metre footprint, standing 32 metres tall. Adjoining the main construction is a second, proposed 3,500 m2 building, with a state-of-the-art test-house facility and a dedicated training area, to transfer vital skills to the next generation of engineers. #MadeInSheffield #Defence

It is with great pride that a small delegation from Sheffield Forgemasters joined the Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer and Secretary of State for Defence, John Healy MP, at No. 10, Downing Street yesterday. Two apprentices, Renee Marsh and Harley Edmonds, were accompanied by People Development Specialist, Harriett Eccles, and CEO, Gary Nutter to the event, which set out to raise the importance of skilled jobs in defence manufacture. We were one of a few select companies chosen to represent industry and in addition to meeting the Ministers, our team spoke to an audience of college students about the well-paid opportunities that manufacturing for the security of our country can offer. Our ongoing apprenticeships programme, coupled with the company’s large-scale recapitalisation programme to underpin defence manufacture, is providing excellent career opportunities for decades to come. Sheffield Forgemasters reposted this
Yesterday we had the pleasure of running an SC21 Cluster session at Sheffield Forgemasters (SFEL), bringing together 15 manufacturing companies from across the UK to share best practices in continuous improvement. A huge thank you to SFEL for their incredible hospitality and for opening their doors to showcase their approach to SC21 and operational excellence. Events like this are a powerful reminder of the strength of industry collaboration—allowing companies to learn from each other and take away valuable ideas to drive improvement in their own organisations. Great discussions, inspiring insights, and a shared commitment to raising industry standards. Looking forward to the next one! Craig Baker PCQI Roger Dent Martin P. Sheffield Forgemasters has awarded a multi-million GBP contract to GH Cranes & Components to supply brand new overhead cranes for our new machining facility. The 11 overhead cranes and a 400-tonne lifting beam will be installed in a planned new 35,000sqm machine shop at Weedon Street in the Meadowhall area, to advance UK defence-sector output, including #AUKUS. GH Cranes beat four other world-class crane manufacturers in the tender process to be awarded preferred bidder status for the design and supply of all overhead cranes required for the state-of-the-art facility, ranging from 40 tonnes to 250 tonnes individual lifting capacity. Craig Fisher, Programmes Director, said: “GH Cranes has been awarded as our preferred bidder for 11 overhead cranes, with a 400-tonne lifting beam for tandem lifts, which will operate in our new machining facility, serving 17 machines, including ultra-large Vertical Turning Lathes. “The tender process was very closely run, but GH Cranes has more than 65 years of experience in the supply of industrial cranes and provided the best technical solutions and the best value for money to win a competitive tender against the other bidders. The cranes will be shipped from GH Cranes’ manufacturing facility in Northern Spain, with the first shipment due to be delivered to Sheffield Forgemasters in 2026. Sheffield-based Professional Lifting Services Ltd have been contracted by GH Cranes & Components for installation of the cranes. Learn more on our website: https://lnkd.in/eQz-wR2q

Sheffield Forgemasters has been granted planning permission to build a landmark 30,000 m2 machining facility on brownfield land in the City’s Meadowhall district. The new facility on Weedon Street will form one of the world’s most advanced large machining facilities, to support manufacture for the UK defence programmes. With work to prepare the site already underway, the building will cover a space equal to 12 Olympic-sized swimming pools and will contain some of the largest and most advanced five-axis Vertical Turning Lathes ever produced. Plans for the new machining facility detail a main building with a circa 272.5 x 110 metre footprint, standing 32 metres tall, located close to the River Don and designed to complement the historic look of the company’s existing buildings. Adjoining the main construction is a second, proposed 3,500 m2 building, with a state-of-the-art test-house facility and a dedicated training area, to transfer vital skills to the next generation of engineers. Machine tools specialist, WaldrichSiegen, is building a series of large Vertical Turning Lathes and associated machines for the machining hall, which will be installed and maintained by McDowell Machining Technologies. Sheffield Forgemasters’ 13,000 tonne forging line and proposed machine shop will create a new generation of engineers and designers trained to work with Industry 4.0 technologies. The machine shop project team consists of Arup, which handled the ecological and travel assessments, Bond Bryan Architects, and JLL, which acted on behalf of Sheffield Forgemasters for the site acquisition and planning submissions.
