  • Diabetes eye screening helps reduce the risk of sight loss - and the earlier problems are found and treated, the less likely vision will be affected. 👁️ To make it easier for people to attend their appointments, new clinics will be running at the beginning of November (6-8) and December (4-6) at Hillsborough football ground. The initiative is being run in collaboration with Sheffield Wednesday Football Club and local Hillsborough GPs as part of a pilot project. Kayleigh Christopher tells us more about the innovative initiative 👇 #diabetes #screening #retinopathy #SWFC

  • Good luck to our amazing nurse-led Trial Tracker team in today's #NHSParliamentaryAwards 🍀 The tracker has made a huge difference in helping patients join vital research studies, and is a national finalist in the Future NHS Award. As well as cutting screening time, the innovative tracker has freed up invaluable nursing time. This has enabled research nurses to provide focused care to patients eligible to take part in trials ✨ The team were nominated for the prestigious award by Gill Furniss, MP for Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough, and chosen to go forward to the national finals in the Future NHS Award category from a record 918 nominations made by 318 MPs across England. The Trial Tracker project was supported with funding from NIHR Sheffield Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) Find out more about the team's regional win at: https://lnkd.in/dMVZ2gSG NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) #ResearchTrials #HealthcareInnovation

  • We're delighted to share that Dr Nicola Peel, former clinical lead at the metabolic bone service, has won The Queen’s Award for Osteoporosis. 👑🦴 The prestigious award was presented to Nicola by The Queen at a reception at Clarence House last week, and recognises her outstanding contribution to osteoporosis treatment and care. Nicola has dedicated more than 30 years to research and clinical management of osteoporosis, a condition that causes bones to weaken and thin, making them more likely to break. As a consultant, she led the development of a one-stop fracture risk assessment service in Sheffield. This was designed to improve the evaluation of people with and at risk of fractures. In addition to a standard DXA scan to measure bone density, some patients undergo additional testing based on their individual needs, including blood tests and specialised scans to identify vertebral fractures. This model of care has since been implemented by other NHS clinics nationwide. Under her leadership, the metabolic bone service also became the first service in the UK to offer biochemical monitoring of osteoporosis treatment in primary care. A simple blood test helps patients, and their GPs know within a few months if they are benefiting from treatment – far earlier and at lower cost than the standard approach using repeat DXA scans. • ❤️ A heart patient has gone home within hours of having his faulty heart valve fixed. 🕕 Christopher Wild, 80, whose procedure was live streamed to an international training conference attended by more than 1,000 cardiologists from across the world, said he hoped the procedure would put “years on his lifespan”. The cutting-edge procedure was performed by a specialist team of cardiologists and nurses from Sheffield's South Yorkshire Cardiothoracic Centre, based at the Northern General Hospital, using the streamlined light-touch transcatheter aortic valve implantation (#TAVI) pathway.  The 'light touch' TAVI procedure was introduced in Sheffield earlier this year, and allows patients over 75 who have severe heart valve disease to have heart valves replaced without general anaesthetic. Severe aortic stenosis is a common condition that causes the heart valve to narrow and not fully open, restricting blood flow out of the heart. The live broadcast also showcased the cutting-edge cardiovascular disease #research taking place in Sheffield, including the British Heart Foundation's Protect TAVI trial, the UK Hydra valve registry and the multinational EASY-As trial. Christopher, who was taking part in all three trials as his aortic stenosis puts him at high risk of heart failure despite initially causing him no symptoms, was full of praise for the Sheffield team: “I can see nothing but benefit in my case. I was a little anxious, but the treatment was first class. It was a tough procedure to go through, and I'm still taking it easy, but to go home on the same day, help free up a bed for the NHS and have the luxury of coming home to welcoming arms; I count my blessings." When asked if he would be happy to have his procedure broadcast to a live audience, Christopher said he was “all for it”. “As well as making my life a bit easier, the live broadcast will help thousands of others and promote the benefits of the procedure,” he added. Welcome to the world, Albie Atlas👼🌍❤️ Albie arrived on the 24th of September, and after a challenging start, to say the least, we’re overjoyed to finally have him home. It’s been one of the toughest weeks of our lives, but we're beyond grateful to have our little boy with us now. Albie spent his first days in NICU at Jessop Wing after a worrying arrival, and we can’t thank the incredible nurses, doctors, and consultants enough for their care during those scary moments. They really are amazing in that place and not just their medical skills but in those small hours of the day when you feel a little helpless & the worry sets in they provided us with all the support we needed! 🙏 After we all lived in the hospital for a week or so, we were able to bring him home earlier this week to be with his big brothers, Bobby & Frankie—who are already proud as punch to have their little bro join the crew! 👦👶👦 Our hearts are full. We love you so much, Albie, and feel so blessed to have you in our family. 💙 Mother & baby doing well now! 👍 What a great early birthday present for me as well! 👏 🎉 Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust The Children's Hospital Charity #Family #Grateful #NICUJourney #ThankYou #ThreeBoys #Love

  • 🚀 We're excited to be launching our Opt-out Blood Borne Virus (BBV) testing in our A&E Department today (Tuesday 1 October 2024). People aged 16 years and older who attend A&E in Sheffield and have bloods taken as part of their routine care will additionally be tested for #HIV, #hepatitis B and #hepatitis C unless they decline.    Opt-out BBV testing in emergency departments has been a flagship initiative in very high HIV prevalence sites since 2022, helping to diagnose thousands of people with serious infections and saving thousands of lives. In the first 18 months more than 5,000 people were found to have a BBV.     The programme has proven a crucial way of tackling health inequalities, disproportionately finding treatable infections in women, older people and people of Black African ethnicity – all groups who are more likely to be diagnosed late in other services.    Sheffield has the second highest rates in Yorkshire and the Humber for new HIV diagnoses per 100,000 and so NICE guidelines recommend that opt-out HIV testing should also take place in our local emergency department.     In November 2023, the decision was taken by the Department of Health and Social Care to fund the expansion of HIV opt-out testing to an additional 46 emergency department sites where HIV prevalence is high, starting from April 2024, for one year. The Northern General Hospital’s A&E Department is one of these 46.    All three infections, once known about, can be effectively managed, or cured. Patients who test positive for any of the blood borne viruses will be offered specialist support and have a treatment plan put in place. Most do not realise they have been at risk, feel completely well for many years before developing advanced disease and/or unknowingly passing these infections on to their partners, and have never had the opportunity to test.    This testing initiative also supports the city’s wider approach to end all new HIV transmissions by 2030 and NHS England’s programme to eliminate Hep C by 2025. Find out more about how life-saving opt-testing for BBV will work in Sheffield: https://lnkd.in/dH59qMXR NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research).

  • We'd like to take a moment to congratulate Professor Oliver Bandmann, Honorary Consultant Neurologist and Professor of Movement Disorders at The University of Sheffield, who received the 2024 Tom Isaacs Award in recognition of his outstanding #Parkinsons research. ✨ The Tom Isaacs Award recognises a researcher who has significantly impacted the lives of people living with Parkinson’s and has involved people with Parkinson’s in a participatory way in their work. Professor Oliver Bandmann’s research is focused on discovering new treatments with the potential to slow, stop or reverse Parkinson’s. This includes ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), a drug already in use to treat liver disease, which was identified as the most promising drug to boost the performance of mitochondria, or the cells batteries, following a drug screen to 2,000 compounds. The team were able to test the drug in a clinical trial, with results showing participants on the drug consistent improved their manner of walking. The drug was also shown to be safe and well tolerated. UDCA is now moving forward to the next stage of clinical testing. As the Movement Disorders Service Lead at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, Professor Bandmann has worked to improve the service for patients and training for Parkinson’s nurses. Under his leadership, a regional shared care protocol for Parkinson’s drugs was developed and implemented across South Yorkshire. This has dramatically simplified and standardised the availability of primary care drugs for Parkinson’s. 👏 Read the story in full here: https://lnkd.in/d3738-HE
