"From a mission perspective and innovation perspective, there’s a lot of synergies between what #ShellFoundation does and what GreenPod Labs does. Shell Foundation is looking at increasing the economics of smallholder farmers and equally looking at minimising greenhouse gas emissions. That’s exactly what our technology does” said Deepak Rajmohan, Founder/CEO of GreenPod Labs. GreenPod Lab’s technology, which leverages ambient active packaging, provides the ability to activate the natural defenses of fruits and vegetables. This innovation extends shelf life at ambient temperatures, thus eliminating the need for costly cold storage and potentially revolutionising the preservation of produce in resource-limited settings. Deepak accepted the $50,000 Post-Harvest Loss Innovation Price on behalf of GreenPod Labs during an event during #ClimateWeekNYC. The Post-Harvest Loss Innovation Prize, launched by Factor[e] Ventures and supported by Shell Foundation, Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, ISF Advisors , MicroSave Consulting (MSC), and AndMore Associates, LLC, aims to discover scalable and practical solutions to this critical issue. 📢 Announcing the winner of the $50,000 Post-Harvest Loss Innovation Prize 🏆 ! At the Cultivating Innovation at the Energy and Agriculture Nexus Event during #ClimateWeekNYC, Factor[e] Ventures, in collaboration with #ShellFoundation and the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, announced that GreenPod Labs has been awarded the $50,000 Post-Harvest Loss Innovation Prize! GreenPod Labs is a pioneering biotech firm, and the award recognises their active packaging technology designed to mitigate post-harvest losses in fruits and vegetables. This active packaging technology extends shelf life at ambient temperatures, thus eliminating the need for costly cold storage and potentially revolutionising the preservation of fresh produce in resource-limited settings. The technology adds significant value for smallholder farmers by helping them minimise post-harvest losses during storage and transport at ambient temperatures. Globally, one-third of food is lost or wasted, causing substantial economic losses and worsening greenhouse gas emissions. This is a particular challenge for smallholder farmers in emerging markets, who bear a disproportionate share of the burden. Yet, new breakthrough technologies designed to combat post-harvest losses hold promise for both boosting these farmers’ incomes and significantly reducing global food waste. The Post-Harvest Loss Innovation Prize, launched by Factor[e] Ventures Ventures and supported by Shell Foundation, Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office through our Catalysing Agriculture by Scaling Energy Ecosystems (CASEE) partnership, ISF Advisors , MicroSave Consulting (MSC), and AndMore Associates, LLC, aims to discover scalable and practical solutions to this critical issue. Shell Foundation’s Head of Financial Solutions, Nicholas Jones, joined Jonathan Cedar, CEO and Co-Founder at BioLite, James C., Director, Carbon Credits at Boomitra, Daniel Sadik, Senior Vice President at Carbon Solutions Group, Amrita Bhandari, Chief of Insights and Strategy at Acumen, and Amy Cortese, Editorial Director at ImpactAlpha for the “Credit where it is due: How carbon markets finance social impact” event during #ClimateWeekNYC. Carbon finance applications can enhance food security, boost incomes and help adaptation to climate change as well as increasing access to clean cooking solutions or diesel-replacing solar irrigation pumps. Nick highlighted the that one of #ShellFoundation's focuses is on mobilising capital for early-stage innovations. By testing innovative financing mechanisms that have ability to help unlock carbon revenues, we can help catalyse and enhance the ability of social enterprises to increase the affordability of assets for customers we seek to serve. What an incredible conversation! Our #ClimateWeekNYC panel brought together leading voices like Jonathan Cedar, Nicholas Jones, Daniel Sadik, James C., and moderator Amy Cortese, hosted by Amrita Bhandari, to explore the future of carbon markets in underserved communities. Key insights from the discussion included: 🔸 Philanthropy stabilizes carbon markets by absorbing risks and providing a price floor, creating market certainty for commercial buyers and enabling social enterprises to access carbon finance as a reliable revenue stream. 🔸 Addressing pricing volatility, complex standards, and high registry costs is essential to unlocking the potential of carbon finance for social enterprises serving low-income communities. 🔸 Strengthening standards and transparency in carbon crediting processes is crucial for building trust in carbon markets and ensuring real value for both the environment and low-income communities. It’s clear that carbon markets hold immense potential to drive sustainable development, but they need greater accountability to truly benefit low-income communities. Thank you to all our speakers and attendees for joining us for this crucial conversation! BioLite | ImpactAlpha | Shell Foundation | Boomitra | Carbon Solutions Group

At the Mastercard MADE launch event, #ShellFoundation’s Head of Smallholder Farmers Portfolio Meera Shah joined partners from Mastercard, African Development Bank Group, Microsoft, Heifer International, U.S. International Development Finance Corporation and others discussed investing in the digital economy in #Africa with Mastercard’s EVP and Community Pass Founder Tara Nathan. Digital inclusion is a pre-cursor to economic inclusion. In 2024 we launched the ‘Harvesting Green Energy for Smallholder Farmers’ initiative in partnership with Mastercard and the Co-operative Bank of Kenya, which introduces clean energy solutions for smallholder farmers – a critical target beneficiary group for Shell Foundation – onto Mastercard’s Farm Pass platform as well as affordable financing from the Co-Operative Bank of Kenya. Shell Foundation provided a grant subsidy to the programme to reduce interest rates for smallholder farmers, and is co-managing the piloting of six income-generating energy assets, which increase farmers’ productivity and when combined with market access enables better loan repayment. Shell Foundation’s contribution was co-funded with UK aid from the UK Government via the Catalysing Agriculture partnership between Shell Foundation and the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. Shell Foundation is proud to become a #Kenya-focused member of the Mobilising Access to the Digital Economy (MADE) Alliance: Africa to work together to drive #digitalaccess to critical services for individuals and businesses in Africa. We look forward to partnering with you and the other MADE Alliance Members.
