Sheppard Robson
Architecture and Planning
We are a collective of architects, interior designers and masterplanners.
About us
Sheppard Robson is an ever-evolving collective of architects, interior designers and masterplanners. Together our team of 370 people design buildings, spaces and places that are people-centred and precision-made. Our family includes our interior design specialists ID:SR and AXIS, which applies our detailed design expertise to major projects by others. From our offices in London, Manchester and Glasgow, we work on a scale, and with a legacy of expertise, that means we can engage with society’s most pressing challenges. The most urgent of these is the need to achieve a better balance between humans and nature on our planet of limited resources. With no single solution, the mitigation of climate change can only be achieved with the critical application of an inventive, multi-layered approach, and by fundamentally rethinking how we live, learn, work and play. Our work is the result of creative, technical and intellectual exchange. People-centred design comes out of an engagement process where architects enable, listen and interpret as well as lead. With a robust methodology for testing ideas, we are able to fine-tune them without losing their pioneering spirit. Every project we make presents the opportunity to push our learning a little further, but we never forget that innovation should always be in the service of a clear purpose – to design for life.

𝗥𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗹 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 For client Ardstone Capital Limited, our proposal to rethink a prominent office building near Bristol Temple Meads train station, has been granted planning permission. The design retains 88% of the existing structure, while drastically improving its sustainability and wellness credentials. The design proposes infilling the irregular shaped floorplates to create free-flowing office space, while an extension to the north will create a two-story colonnade, framing the new double-height reception. The repositioned entrance reorients the building towards Temple Quarter and allows ground floor activity to spill out into the revitalised public realm. The construction of three new lightweight storeys will replace existing roof elements and new private terraces with views of the city will wrap around the building as these levels steps back. “The transformative nature of the project is balanced with resourcefulness. We have retained as much as we possibly can whilst using bold architectural ideas to signal the arrival of a major new development and public spaces for Bristol.” – Mark Kowal, Sheppard Robson Partner. Fantastic to be working on the project for our client Ardstone Capital, and on behalf of the Ardstone Regional Office Fund, a joint venture between Ardstone Capital and CBRE IM. 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗻... 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗹 SR partners Anna Shapiro and Nick Ffoulkes have co-written a piece on the practice’s connection to Bristol, and how post-industrial sites such as Mead Street, Temple Mead Quarter, are fertile ground for innovation, ingenuity and new perspectives on communities. “Imagine a place rejuvenated in partnership – collective action that welcomes the convergence of home, work, culture, shopping education. A place free of mono; a place that champions the power of poly. A place built by reconnecting people – councils, developers, consultants, and the public – to find common ground and mediate tension about what the future looks like.” Read the full piece here:

SR partner Eugene writes for New London Quarterly (NLA) about the intersection of lab and office space design, referencing the award-winning TTP Campus (TTP plc). The article examines how modular design and open labs are breaking down silos, creating environments that bring research and workplace communities closer together. “Offices are less reliant on heavy-handed brand guidelines and grand gestures to express themselves; instead, they showcase activity and embrace openness. But how have the changes in approach impacted science development? How has a sector previously known for tight security and controlled spaces become less siloed, blurring the boundaries between spaces for science and traditional office space?” Read the piece here: https://lnkd.in/eVehDUwv You can also check out the whole issue on the NLA's website: https://lnkd.in/dnKPwZPq #officedesign #designingfortheknowledgeeconomy

𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗪𝗲𝘀𝘁, 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 On behalf of Glenbrook, the proposal would provide 364 new apartments across a 44-storey building grounded in its urban and heritage context. At ground level, a dramatic triple-height, arched colonnade—a subtle nod to the architectural language of the listed viaducts and industrial heritage—provides a pedestrian route along Whitworth Street West. Newly landscaped public spaces will also enhance the streetscape and increase local biodiversity. “By opening up the site, we are creating vibrant public spaces and pathways that enhance connections across this part of the city. The building’s terracotta, high-performance façade references both the existing and historic context while introducing a distinctly modern addition to the evolving skyline of Manchester.” – Tony O'Brien, Sheppard Robson Partner.
